CLASS OF '65 50th ANNIVERSARY REUNION TODAY!

Okay 'mates! It's all in place: Our half-century party is
on Saturday, July 25th at the Cornerstone Bar and Grill
at 10651 Main Street in Clarence. It's in the afternoon
from 3-5:30 pm. $15 will gain you entry and includes
light appetizers. Cash bar. You'll be greeted by a few
classmates who'll take your cash and point out the table
with name tags. Volunteers welcome! When we settled
on the ticket price we did so with the understanding that
it would safely cover our expected costs. We propose
that the extra will be presented to the ACHS Alumni
Foundation as a gift from the Class of '65 (be thinking
about how you'd like it earmarked, e.g., for the scholar-
ship fund, actual physical gift---a tree?) It says here it'll
be wonderful in any surprising ways to get together!

Peace and love from your devoted organizing team.

    CLASS OF '65 50th ANNIVERSARY
REUNION  SET FOR SAT., JULY 25th

Dear Classmates,

Here's hoping you're faring well and wondering if
it's really possible that 5 decades have passed since
we left Amherst High. It's pointless to argue with the
calendar, so a bunch of us decided that if anything
calls for a bash, this milestone surely does, and so
we've come up with a plan. We sure hope a sizeable
percentage of the largest class in school history will
be able to join in. Here's the lowdown:

We'll meet at The Cornerstone Bar and Grille,
10651 Main St., Clarence on Saturday, July 25th
from 3-5:30 pm.
The Cornerstone is a nice place
around 15 minutes from the school, maybe 6 miles
east of the intersection with Transit Rd. The plan is
to have light appetizers and a cash bar, ample time
for hanging out, and a 'formal' time for the entertain-
ment portion, featuring whatever we all want to
come up with, a song or two maybe, a poem or
something, and most importantly, an open mike
useful to share memories as the spirit moves from
that significant time in our youth.

The cost will depend on how many classmates can
make it, of course, and further details will be forth-
coming. In the meantime, the best thing to do will
be to reach out to as many 'mates as you might be
in touch with. We can reach many on FB, but this
site gives us the opportunity to expand way beyond
that -- if, that is, we can get other folks to enroll here.
You've done so if you're getting this email. Please
spread the word. Let's make this one-shot deal a
grand old time!

         EVENT JULY 24th, 25th or 26th
         DURING ACHS 85th BIRTHDAY
       ALL-CLASS REUNION WEEKEND!

The organizing committee chaired by Phil Crafts ('65) is now
arranging the Class of '65 50th Anniversary reunion event
during the ACHS 85th Birthday All-
Class Reunion
(
July 23-26, 2015)! You'll hear more from Phil & the
'65 organizing committee shortly. CLICK HERE FOR

ALL-CLASS REUNION (July 23-26).

Meantime, here's Phil's initial letter:

Greetings half-century-out-of ACHS Class of 65ers!  I’m
writing to you on behalf of your fearless 50th Reunion
Organizing Committee to share with you a few of the
details we’re working on and to invite you to throw in
suggestions you might want to add. It’s too early to give
you written-in-stone details, but I can give you some
fairly solid ideas:

* The EVENT will take place the WEEKEND OF JULY 24th
-- PROBABLY JULY 25th -- so that it corresponds with the
All-Class 85th Birthday celebration of ACHS. That will
enable us to take part in activities planned for that
occasion as well as our own gathering. It also narrows
down dates available to us, and it seems that Saturday
afternoon the 25th is the best date. The All-Classes
group is
throwing a cocktail party morphing into dinner
that night from
7-10pm across Main Street at Daemon
College (known
to us back when as Rosary Hill). That
group suggested
that single year classes might therefore
want to meet
on the Friday night before, but foreseeing the
frustration
of folks only then arriving from points all over
the place,
we ruled out Friday in favor of a time slot
earlier in the
day on Saturday. So we’re looking into some
kind of
brunch or late afternoon gathering on SATURDAY,
JULY 25th, depending, in part, on where it will be held.

* WHERE will it be held, you might ask. We decided to
find a nice place reasonably close to the High School
and probably somewhere in Amherst rather than
Buffalo. A couple of us are scoping out potential places,
including some in Williamsville and Clarence.  We’re
looking for a nice big room with a bar and buffet set-up
and a small stage with a sound system.

* What sort of EVENT?  We decided against a sit-down
meal because it limits milling around and schmoozing.
What we’re looking for is a free-form party which would
include some kind of organized “show” portion featuring
anything you want---sing a song, do a dance, read some-
thing you’ve written, step up to the mike unrehearsed and
share memories, juggle. . .

* Finally, a word or two about communication.  The best
way to get a good turnout from the largest class in ACHS
history is word of mouth augmented by reference to various
sites. If you are on FB, find the “I Grew Up in Amherst, NY”
group site, (started by
Steve Raikin Greenfield, ‘67 & Sue
Eckert Avner '65).
You’ll find an ongoing discussion thread
(initiated by
Don Croll '65) concerning all things reunion.
Also on
Facebook is the Amherst Central High School
Grads" g
roup site. We’ve launched our own “ACHS CLASS
OF
‘65" FACEOOK GROUP as well, which will be
the other o
bvious place to look. Then, of course,
there’s the
Boomer Reunion site www.boomereunion.com
created by Steve in 2011, to be a platform for communi-
cation among all Boomers. It enables insanely long-
winded notes like this one, but also will enable us to
pretty much do it all, from group emailing, to selling
t
ickets, to keeping track of who’s coming, etc. If you’re
reading this note it’s because you’re among the 60+
classmates who’ve enrolled here already and left your
mail or street address. If so, please spread the word to
others to do likewise. It would be great to get the welcome
out to everyone!

                                             * * *

I’m mighty excited at the prospect of us all getting together
and celebrating the good fortune that assembled us together
to share a most interesting time and place. If we all pitch in,
we can make it happen.

PEACE AND LOVE,

Phil Crafts ('65)
(and Don Alan Croll, Lynn Anderson Drilling, Bobbe Modeas,
David Schultz, Rick Greenberg, & Barb Goldberg Bandel)

With special thanks to Steve for sharing wisdom gained in his
 own reunion/community building work.

BOOMER REUNION RAISES $2,049.09
FOR AMHERST ALUMNI FOUNDATION!

Boomer Reunion Treasurer Cindy Cumming '67 has announced that last June's inaugural Boomer Reunion -- involving a new cooperative effort of 8 ACHS alumni classes ('63-'70) -- successfully raised $2,049.09 as our first contribution to the Amherst Central Alumni Foundation (ACAF). Cindy, a member of the ACAF Board of Directors, will formally present this contribution to the ACAF later this month.

As proposed by Boomer Reunion chair Steve Raikin Greenfield '67, $1,000 of that amount has been designated by the ACAF Board for beautification of the exterior of the school building -- in particular, our proposal to replace the Tiger Ivy -- subject to ACHS's approval of a project implementation plan.

The ACAF Board will also determine how the remaining $1,049.09 will be spent. Possibilities include grants for worthy ACHS students & faculty, a proposal for an Alumni-Student Mentorship & Tutoring Program which the Class of '67 plans to develop this year, and/or other worthy projects which the Board may also consider.

ALUMNI WHO CAME OF AGE IN THE 60s
ENJOY FIRST-EVER "BOOMER REUNION"

About 140 alumni from the Classes of '63 - '70 and their guests attended Amherst High School's very first "Boomer Reunion" on Friday, June 24th and Saturday, June 25th, 2011.

Photo & video highlights of the June 24th welcoming Dinner Ceremonies & Cabaret Show, & related events, have been posted on this web site & you can also watch the videos on YouTubeThey include the fabulous Cabaret Show, starring Master of Ceremonies Don Croll '65 & a wonderfully talented alumni all-star castBoomer Poet Laureate Jim Hettig's '67 brilliant recital of his epic poem celebrating life as we knew it back in The Day at Amherst High School; and Bob Bakert's '68 nostalgic "Sing-Along" performance of some of our favorite 60's folk songs
Other video highlights include award presentations to several of our most beloved former teachers (and their wise, witty and emotional remarks); and tributes to our classmates who served in the military, including four who died in Vietnam; as well as our dedication of the Boomer Reunion to all of our classmates & teachers who are no longer with us.

The reunion successfully raised funds for our Alumni Foundation, including to restore the "Tiger Ivy," provide grants to worthy students and teachers, launch a new alumni-student mentoring & tutoring program and for other important charitable activities. We'll announce the total amount raised once Boomer Reunion Treasurer Cindy Cumming '67 completes the final accounting of ticket sales, donations, and expenses. Meantime, we hope that many more of you will send your much-needed tax-deductible donations to the Alumni Foundation through the Sponsorship/Donation link.

To help us plan for future Boomer activities, we would also greatly appreciate alums offering their feedback, comments and suggestions through the User Forum and Message Forum links, and you may also continue to contact us privately as well.

THANKS TO ALL BOOMER VOLUNTEERS!

Organizing the June 24-25 Boomer Reunion was of course a labor of love for our alma mater & our former classmates & teachers, plus a real team effort. We're very grateful to all of the marvelous volunteers who offered their much-appreciated assistance & support. We thanked many of them at the June 24th dinner, to which we'd like to add a special thank you to Ellen Marshall '69, Co-President of the Amherst Central Alumni Foundation, who repeatedly moved heaven and Earth to facilitate this historic reunion. Thanks also to Alumni Foundation office manager Chris Byrd, whose ongoing technical assistance and advice were likewise deeply appreciated. We appreciate Clay Pasternack '68 of the Alumni Foundation Board for his early strong support and advocacy of our reunion proposal. We also sincerely thank both Clay and Boomer Reunion Treasurer & Alumni Foundation Board member Cindy Cumming '67 for their enormous ongoing efforts to further update the alumni contact information data base. Cindy's financial oversight was crucial to our success.

Volunteers who were especially active in helping Boomer Reunion chair and Cabaret Show producer Steve Raikin (Greenfield) '67 to conceptualize, organize & implement the Boomer Reunion included Linda Baumler (Koziol) '67 (planning committee co-chair & "point person" for organization of the Cabaret Show) & Cindy Cumming '67 (planning committee co-chair & treasurer); the magnificent Cabaret Show cast: master of ceremonies Don Croll '65, poet laureate Jimmy Hettig '67, singer Linda Baumler (Koziol) '67, singer Grant Golden '68, accompanist & singer Vicki Forbes (Dueck) '66, guitarist & 60s folk singer Bob Bakert '68, singer Sandy Cumming '69, & singer Melissa Cumming '78; plus Sue Irons (Lehner) '67, Mike Koziol (Linda's husband), Abe Dueck (Vicki's husband), Dennis Gural '66, Terry Slaven '67, Coach Jerry Gasz '65, David Schultz '65, Deborah Brush '68, & David D'Amico '67.

Last January, Peter Hall '67, Don, Cindy, Linda  & Sandy played key roles in appearing with Steve before the Alumni Foundation Board of Directors to obtain approval for the Boomer Reunion. Our beloved former math teacher Woody Friedrich provided invaluable assistance in helping us to locate & contact other former Amherst teachers. We also appreciate ACHS choral director Justin Pomietlarz being such a gracious host for our first Cabaret Show rehearsal. Abe did a fabulous job videotaping the reunion dinner ceremonies & cabaret show, Mike shined as the chief picnic bar-b-quer, Coach Gasz organized a fun picnic softball game, Sue organized the dinner greeting committee, & Dennis made those wonderfully colorful name tags.

Steve also thanks his wonderful wife and teammate Pearl Raikin (Jefferson H.S., San Antonio, TX '65) for her ongoing help & support, incredible patience & tolerance, & limitless sense of humor.

Meanwhile, here are some Boomer Reunion highlights:

 CABARET SHOW REHEARSALS

Several members of the outstanding all-star alumni cast that was assembled for the June 24th Cabaret Show (Don, Linda, Vicki, Grant, Bob, Sandra & Melisssa) played leading roles in some of the most memorable ACHS Musicals of the 1960's.

Planning, conceptualization & collaboration for the show began in earnest in January, 2011. Then, starting about 4 weeks before the show, via conference calls & e-mails, cast members proposed and discussed songs for the show, and sheet music was quickly copied and shared with the show's gifted piano accompanist Vicki Forbes (Dueck) & the rest of the cast, who remarkably mastered the complex musical scores in only 1 week! These amazing performers -- most of whom hadn't seen each other in well over 40 years -- gathered for their 1st rehearsal on Thursday, June 23rd in the ACHS Choral Room, where they were graciously hosted by choral director Justin Pomietlarz. After 90 minutes, rehearsals moved to the beautiful Samuel's Grande Manor in Clarence, where the show would be performed the following night. Several weeks are normally required to prepare such a show, and Justin was astonished that these seasoned "youngsters" were able to put it all together with essentially only 1/2 day of rehearsals!

SCHOOL TOUR & DISCUSSION GROUP
FEATURING TWO VIETNAM WAR VETERANS

The Boomer Reunion officially began on Friday afternoon, June 24th with school tours sponsored by the Alumni Foundation and a terrific afternoon discussion group, featuring a lively session of sharing insights about our generation's collective experiences "Coming of Age in the Sixties at Amherst."

Participants included two Vietnam War Veterans -- Robert Nichol '64 and Jay Wopperer '65, who shared insightful accounts, not only of some of their experiences in Vietnam, but also of some of the things that happened to them upon their return home. Bob was awarded the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, & two Purple Hearts for his Vietnam service. The differences in some of their points of view (regarding the evolution of their outlooks about certain aspects of the War) contributed to a fascinating discussion.

Other participants in the discussion included Melissa ("Missy") Riley '66, Rob Goldberg '65, Rick Greenberg '65 and his wife Marion, and Pearl Raikin & her husband Steve.

The rest of the wide-ranging discussion of the Sixties included a lively exchange about the stark contrast between minimal racial diversity during that decade -- both at our alma mater and in the Town of Amherst generally -- in contrast to today's far more diverse demographics. The group also thoughtfully shared poignant recollections about such watershed events as the assassinations of John & Robert Kennedy & Martin Luther King, segregation and the evolution of the civil rights movement, the escalation of the Vietnam War and the growth of the anti-war movement, the generational divisions between "hippies" and everyone else, Woodstock, the Chicago 7 Trial, the first landing on the Moon, and the Kent State & Jackson State shootings. Of course, they also shared their recollections of various Sixties values, best summarized euphemistically as "drugs, sex, & rock 'n roll."

It all made for a lively discussion that could have easily gone on for hours! To be continued!

Several participants also expressed strong support for continuing the new Boomer Website as an important & rapidly expanding vehicle for facilitating ongoing communication among Amherst boomer alums -- and perhaps for future Boomer Reunions!

DINNER AND CABARET SHOW

On Friday night, June 24th, 110 Boomer Alumni and their guests attended the marvelous cocktail reception and dinner at Samuel's Grande Manor. There were 125 folks on hand for the wonderful after-dinner Cabaret Show.

As the delicious buffet dinner was concluding, Boomer Reunion chair Steve Raikin greeted the alumni & their guests; discussed the new boomer alumni website & the networking & sense of community it was spawning; thanked reunion volunteers for their hard work & marvelous team effort; and thanked everyone for contributing to the fundraising effort to restore the "Tiger Ivy," provide grants for worthy students & teachers, & launch a new alumni-student mentoring program.

Steve noted that while we Boomer Alumni were at Amherst, two of the most contentious issues facing our society were Vietnam & Civil Rights. There was a tribute to fellow alumni who died in Vietnam (including a moment of silence) and to the many alumni who are veterans (including several who were in the audience). The alumni who in Vietnam gave their "last full measure of devotion" to our nation -- all at the age of 21 -- included SP 4 Robert Gapinski '66, WO 1 David Erenstoft '67, SP 4 George Ross, Jr. '63, and 2nd Lieut. Ronald Stetter (Sweet Home '64). To see video of the tribute to 4 alumni who died in Vietnam, click here [starting at 6:23].

Alumni also recalled some of the other significant events of the turbulent 1960's that were an important part of our collective experience "coming of age" at Amherst. To see video of remembrances of the assassination of President Kennedy; of tributes to Amherst alumni (including some who attended the dinner) who were at Kent State University during the May, 1970 shootings that took the lives of 4 students on that campus (during an anti-Vietnam War protest) & (the same month) 2 more students at Jackson State; plus a tribute to several other Amherst alumni (many of whom likewise attended the dinner) who served our country as veterans of the armed forces -- click here [starting at 5:00].

Eight of our esteemed former teachers -- five of whom attended the dinner -- were honored with Certificates of Gratitude and Appreciation. Receiving their honors in person (and sharing precious words of sage advice, wisdom and wit, much to the audience's delight!) were Mort Klayman (drama), Beck Brown (economics, American History, sociology, & debate team coach), Woody Friedrich (math), Peter Demmin (chemistry) and Coach Bob McAllister (physical education, coach of soccer, track & gymnastics). Also honored in absentia were Donald Munson (principal), Virginia Federico (French), & Walter Reitz (chorus), who were unable to attend the event. To see video of the faculty award presentations & our former teachers' wonderful words of wisdom & wit, click here [starting at 8:55] & also click here. To see the text of the Faculty Awards, click here

Afterward, Boomer Reunion Planning Committee Co-Chair Linda Baumler (Koziol) '67 spoke movingly about her recently departed best friend Sharon Hess '67, symbolizing all of our beloved former classmates & teachers who are no longer with us, but who shall never be forgotten. We dedicated the Boomer Reunion to all of them. To see video of Linda's memorial tribute to our late classmates & teachers, click here [starting at 6:25].

Boomer Reunion Poet Laureate Jimmy Hettig '67 then brought down the house with his magnificent portrayal of our unique Amherst experiences during the 60's. Everyone agreed that Jim really "nailed it" as he brilliantly touched upon several poignant and hilarious aspects of what it was like to be a student at Amherst High School during the tumultuous 60's. We've posted the text of Jim's magnificent poem under the "Poet Laureate" tab (or click here). To see video of Jim reciting his amazing poem at the reunion dinnerclick here!

Next up was the Cabaret Show, starring the remarkable & incomparable Don Croll '65 as the show's gifted Master of Ceremonies, who thrilled the audience with an absolutely stupendous performance -- emotionally reminiscent of his memorable starring roles on the Amherst High School stage! Everyone seemed thrilled to have another chance to enjoy Don's amazing acting & singing genius! The other members of the talented cast likewise shined on stage -- accompanist & singer Vicki Forbes (Dueck) '66; singers Linda Baumler (Koziol) '67, Grant Golden '68, Sandra Cumming '69, Melissa Cumming '78; & trumpeter/producer Steve Raikin (Greenfield) '67. The audience  responded positively to the cabaret show's exciting & nostalgic musical trip down memory lane -- frequently erupting with enthusiastic applause.

The alumni performers won rave reviews from the 125 lucky alumni & their guests who saw the show in person. To see video of the Cabaret Show, click here [starting at 7:20]; click here; click here; click here; click here; & click here. To see the lyrics to the wonderful songs performed during the Cabaret Show, click here.

Popular & talented Atlanta singer, songwriter and guitarist Bob Bakert '68 closed the magical evening in fine nostalgic fashion with his rousing "audience sing-along" tribute to some of our favorite Sixties folk songs. Bob's fantastic guitar artistry -- combined with his wonderful showmanship & humorous reminiscences about Amherst -- likewise resurrected the spirit, atmosphere & zeitgeist of the Sixties & provided the appreciative audience with a wonderful ending to this entertaining night. To watch the videos of Bob's performance, click here [starting at 6:05] & click here.

The overwhelming consensus of the attending alumni and guests was that the entire event was truly sensational -- that it succeeded far beyond expectations in evoking many cherished memories of our years as Amherst students, and that this was truly a very special occasion that they would never forget.

The video of this magical evening was skillfully produced by Abe Dueck, Vicki Forbes Dueck's husband (thanks Abe!):

PICNIC

The next day, about 65 alumni and guests had a great time at the picnic on Saturday, June 25th. They were so busy socializing and enjoying the delicious bar-b-que (Linda's husband Mike Koziol did a great job grilling the burgers and dogs -- thanks Mike!) that they didn't seem to mind the cool temperatures and abundant rain puddles. As promised, legendary high school baseball coach Jerry Gasz '65 organized a terrific co-ed softball game. Indeed, a great time was had by all!

GLEN PARK TAVERN SOCIAL

The final reunion event was an informal "social" at Glen Park Tavern, where the idea of the Boomer Reunion was born last July. (For the Boomer Reunion chair's account of the 2010 "Glenn Park Tavern Summit" and related topics, click here!). Boomer alums and their guests truly enjoyed the delicious (and free!) Buffalo chicken wings, discounted beverages, and marvelous camaraderie!

It was truly a remarkable ending to a first-of-its-kind reunion. Who knows? Perhaps we'll do it again someday!

This afternoon, members of the "I Grew Up in Amherst, NY" Facebook Group launched a critical endeavor to try to help our beloved friend and fellow Tiger Alumni CHUCK GENRICH ('64), who is on Facebook, to find a compatible kidney donor -- who must have either an A+ or O blood type -- for an urgently-needed kidney transplant.

Chuck's kidneys have stopped functioning. He is now undergoing 14 hours per week of dialysis to keep him alive while he awaits a new kidney. However, there's currently a 3-5 year waiting list for folks seeking cadaver kidneys, and chances of a successful transplant are higher with a kidney donated by a living person.

Anyone willing to consider donating a kidney may lawfully specify a recipient, which is what we're trying to help facilitate for Chuck. His health insurance would pay the donor's related medical & hospital expenses.

TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE: Doctors at the Johns Hopkins University Hospital's Kidney Transplant Team hope to complete Chuck's evaluation assessment in February. If Chuck is declared eligible for a transplant, he is hoping that he can receive his new kidney ASAP thereafter.

We hope that the ACHS Alumni Foundation (who we will contact ASAP) -- & alumni at this "ACHS Grads" FB Group -- will be able to participate in this important undertaking to promptly "spread the word" about Chuck's search for a kidney donor.

You are cordially invited to read additional details -- including comments from Chuck Genrich & further background info -- at the link below or at http://www.facebook.com/groups/58529246735/

For further info, contact Steve Raikin (Greenfield) at raikinlaw@aol.com and/or Chuck Genrich at
