Bernard Gallow - Class Of 1971

SCIPIO CENTER - Bernard A. 'Bernie' Gallow, 58, of 2301 Sherwood Road, Scipio Center, passed away Saturday, March 12, 2011. Bernie was a graduate of Auburn High School with the class of 1971, and from Cayuga Community College with an AAS in police science/political justice. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, serving from 1971-1975, National Guard member from 1975-1976, and the Army Reserves from 1976-1977. He joined the Cayuga County Sheriff's Department in 1980, retiring from full-time duties in 2008. Currently he was serving part-time in the Security Division at the Cayuga County Court House and was a member of the Moravia Police Department. Over the years he received several letters of commendation for his exemplary service. He was a member of the Fleming I, Fleming II and Poplar Ridge Fire Departments as an EMT. A former hockey coach for the Auburn Hockey Club, he was a volunteer fundraiser for Freedom Recreational Services. A passionate and devoted martial artist for more than 40 years, which began while stationed on the Island of Okinawa under Grandmaster Shimabukuro Bernie had studied many styles of martial arts, developing his own defensive tactics program to aid the safety of the law enforcement community. His parents, George and Gertrude Gallow; and two brothers, Michael and Paul, predeceased him. Surviving is his wife, Geralyn Comstock Gallow, and their children, Jennifer Lynn Gallow and fiance, Garrett Shepherd, of Auburn, Michael Andrew Gallow and Joseph Paul Gallow, of Scipio Center; Bernie's pride and joy, grandson Brayden Michael Gallow; sisters, Lorraine Roffe (Ron), Auburn, Lynne Kelly (Kevin), of Auburn, Suzanne Chauvin (Lee), of Weedsport; uncles, Joseph, Peter, Carl and Wilfred Giesler, of Powassen, Ont., Canada; aunts, Madeline Weiler, of of Powassen, Ont., and Patricia Giesler, of Ottawa, Ont.; several nieces, nephews and cousins. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Friday, March 18, in Sacred Heart Church, Melrose Road, Auburn. Interment with full honors will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be held 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, at Farrell's Funeral Service Inc., 84 South St., Auburn.
