Steve served on the SS Empress Baltimore with the Merchant Marines.
Sadly, he went missing on December 25, 1965. Three years later Steve was reported to have been sighted among prisoners in a Viet Cong jungle camp near Da Nang. It wasn't until 1976 that Steve's remains were identified among those found in a grave in Phen Yen Province.
Steve was a good guy who died serving his country. He will be remembered by all who knew him.
If I remember correctly, Steve was active in the Belmont Sea Scouts and that he sailed doesn't come as a surprise. What is surprising is that I, too, sailed with MSTS during the Vietnam war in 1966, out of Oakland.
As I remember Steve, he was a very friendly chap - and as strong as an ox.
The story of the Empress Baltimore can be found here. I take it Steve was one of the two guys who went looking for the skipper in Que Nhon. (I also called on Que Nhon when I sailed.)

A hero for sure....what a nice guy and he left this world way too soon. My heart goes out to his family!
