The best thing that happened to me after high school was getting a speeding ticket. The summer before my freshman year of college, I got pulled over zooming down Lynn Lane. Since I was still a minor, I had to go to court and was sentenced to Defensive Driving. While in court, I looked across the room and there was Amy. She too was a minor speeder (that is a speeder who happened to be a minor). I hoped that we would end up in the same class but since I was sentenced before her I did not know. October 1st came and sure enough, we had enrolled in the same class. I had eight hours to win her over (or wear down her resistance) and six years later (to the day) we were married. It has been almost twenty years together and life is good.
If you scroll down, you'll see some pictures of me. Go ahead, I'll wait. I look about the same as I did in high school, just with less hair. Since graduation I've written some books and magazine articles, learned to play drums from the drummer of The Call, gotten my Bachelor's and Master's degrees, traveled to the Carribean and England, gotten addicted to Formula 1 racing, and once shot a man for snoring too loud (well maybe not that last one).
Career-wise, I've taught classes, been on a tech support help desk, designed web pages, did marketing consultation, and am currently an analyst at American Airlines. I've finished my first novel and am dutifully looking for an agent.
Having decided we had had enough sleep, Amy and I had two wonderful children. Hope, 6, and Piers, 3. They are a lot of fun and two amazing kids. I've learned to appreciate the surrealness having children brings to your life. Things like being lectured by a 2 year-old about the differences between excavators and backhoes, or seeing a 5 year-old roll her eyes at you like she is already 12. I learned some important life lessons from them as well, most noticably don't teach them to sing "Baby Got Back" when your wife is within earshot. The Dewey family has a lot of fun together and I am thrilled to be a part of it.
The oddest thing about looking back at high school is realizing that I've met far more people from high school after I graduated than I ever did when all 800 of us were in the same set of buildings. I must have kept my head down while I was at school and didn't bother to look up until much later. As was said in "It's a Wonderful Life," "Youth is wasted on the young."
