In Memory

Nancy Stilwell

Nancy Stilwell Weeks was a bright light. In all of my memories of her she was smiling, kind and had a natural grace all her own. I knew her in high school because of Choral and then grew to cherish her friendship even more while we were at university in Victoria. She was an accomplished student, gaining her Masters in Library Sciences and later had a brilliant career at the Library of Parliament in Ottawa. In her honour, UBC has named a prize after her in the Department of Library, Archival and Informational Studies. Those of us who knew her are better people for it. We miss her.

Nancy was my first date (in grade 8 at Rideau).  We went to a school dance.  I remember on late afternoon in at Western, years later,  hearing a flute soloing off and down the halls.  I followed it until I found the source, Nancy sitting on the stairs of the theatre (great acoustics she said) .  Small memory that will forever follow and comfort me. Always my first date, the girl on the stairs, a friend, Nancy. - Dean

I remember Nancy being able to walk to Rideau down the sidewalks on Elbow Drive intensely reading a dark green hard covered antique version of either the likes of Wuthering Heights or Jane Austin and totally lost in her books...never wavering from her path of walking ..... an old fashined girl from another era.

I remember Nancy from French 10 - I think she sat with Tracy Beaumont.  She often had a musical instrument with her (violin, flute, I can't remember).  We watched those interminable Monsieur Thibaut film strips.  Film strips!  Whart a memory - try and explain those to your kids. : )

I met Nancy in French 30 - I remember her as an old soul - smart, kind, so incredibly smart AND talented - and always carrying her instrument of the day, violin or flute. Hugh, she was still hanging out with Tracy in French class! That's where I met Tracy too (and where I began to love French! The dreaded films must have been abandoned by grade 12).
