David was born on September 28, 1951 and passed away on Wednesday, August 31, 2016. David was a resident of LaMoure, North Dakota. David was formerly from Hettinger, North Dakota. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date in Hettinger ND.

Pastor David Roehl, formerly of LaMoure, N.D., died from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle automobile accident that occurred the evening of Aug. 31, 2016.  

David Duane Roehl was born Sept. 28, 1951 in Miles City, Monta., to Donald and Ginny Roehl. He graduated from Luther North High of Chicago, Ill. in 1969. After which he was enrolled in the Moody Bible Institute of Chicago, graduating in 1976. David also earned his ordination from the Salvation Army College, his certificate of liberal arts from the University of Minnesota, bachelor’s degree in Religious Administration and master’s degree in Criminal Justice from Clayton University, and a Master’s Degree in Theology of Restorative Justice from Therapon University.

David had previously served as the pastor of the United Methodist Church in Hettinger from 2001-2004. He served as the parish pastor for the Wesleyan Church and the United Church of Christ. He also had a vast history of ministerial work with the Salvation Army, American Red Cross, and the Civil Air Patrol.

He was also proudly affiliated with the Kiwanis Club for more than 39 years, earning him several awards of service and recognition.  In addition, David was a licensed peace officer since 1978 working as a deputy sheriff, correctional officer, traffic patrol officer, emergency services officer, and chaplain. David was law enforcement’s number one fan building a huge collection of badges, toy police cars, uniforms, and other memorabilia that decorated his office space from floor to ceiling with what he loved.

Although David was very accredited, he excelled greatly in being a father and husband. He married his wife, Darlene, in June of 1987, and adopted her two children Brian and Stephen as his own. David and Darlene had their first child, Andrew, together in September of 1989. Their family was very big on movies and celebrated every occasion of birthdays and holidays with the utmost love and fun.

He adored being a grandpa to his grandchildren Cherokee, Jasmine, Ryene, and Emma. The key to David’s heart was food and family. He loved peel-and-eat shrimp and in-shell peanuts; the kind of food you had to work for.

David had just finished American Red Cross training in Minnesota, he was traveling back home in LaMoure, to be with his wife when he was tragically struck by another vehicle. The loss weighs heavy on the hearts of his family as he will always be terribly missed and forever remembered for his contagious smile, his amazing presence, and his extraordinary love for family, friends and strangers.

A celebration of David’s life will be held at the Hettinger Theater on his birthday, Sept. 28, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. Everyone is welcomed to come and enjoy his favorite foods, share some memories, have fun, and enjoy one of his favorite pastimes- going to the movies.
