Tell us about your Family

Linda and I met in 1968, married in 1970 and have lived since 1971 in the Cedar Rapids area. We have two children, Julie and Nathan.
Julie is married to Kevin Drisko and stepmother to three wonderful young adults Cody, Courtney and Kendall Drisko. Julie works in clinical research for a medical device company. After living in Switzerland for three years, she and Kevin now live in Newport Beach, California where he continues his work at Edwards Life Science.
Nathan and his wife Alishia have two children, Zaida 17, and Liam 13. In 2016 they moved from Oskaloosa to Camillus, New York, and they now reside in nearby Warners. Nathan is Regional Manager for Musco Lighting.
My mom, Kathryn, still lives on her own in Clear Lake. Dad died November of 2014.

Tell us about your working life / career. What work did you do? What accomplishments in this area are you most proud of?

I retired in 2011 after teaching for 40 years at Kennedy High School in Cedar Rapids. Linda worked for Rockwell Collins and retired in 2014. Teaching journalism lead me to become a leader in scholastic journalism in Iowa and nationally, and that lead to opportunities for travel to conventions across the country. I continue to work as a mentor for Iowa journalism teachers.

Where have you traveled

Linda and I enjoy riding our bicycles on recreational trails, and in December of 2014 we rode from Key Largo to Key West and back as part of an organized ride. More recently we joined friends on a bike trip to the islands in the Puget Sound of NW Washington and British Columbia. Since then, most of our travel has been to Arizona where my sister Sue and her husband live (Mesa).
Now, much of our travel is to connect with friends and family in upstate New York, California, and to Switzerland where Julie and Kevin were living. Our trip there and side trips to France and Italy were unforgettable. Upstate New York and New England in general are both scenic and historical, and we've traveled there, enjoying fall colors in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and New Hampshire.
I enjoy fishing for trout and walleyes, and competing in golf. We also are active in our church, and sing in the choirs. I have been a member of the Harmony Hawks Barbershop Chorus for the past 25 years.
Starting in the 1980s I taught outdoor stress / challenge classes and led backpacking and canoeing trips into some wild places. That explains one of the photos I posted. I still enjoy wilderness travel but double knee replacement surgery in 2013 has limited how adventuresome I can be. My knees are now fully healed and I can enjoy most of the activities I previously enjoyed except running and playing basketball.
Linda and I have traveled to Florida and California for short periods in recent winters, but we still love living in Cedar Rapids, one of the best affordable places to live in America.

Any stories from CLHS days to pass on?

The passing of Lud Wangberg (June 2017) and Al Koepke a few years ago remind me of how important CLHS's music program was to me. Both band and choir led me to so many opportunities I would have missed. It was the most fun we had all day, and we learned so much of our cultural history through the music we learned.
More than that, Al Koepke's choirs were the first place I had a teacher who drove us to pursue excellence. Our senior year choir trip to South Dakota was a memorable climax high school.
I gave up playing the trumpet and tuba long ago, but not before meeting the love of my life, Linda Kenison from Northwood, while playing in the NIACC band.
I still sing in several choirs; St. Paul's UMC Sanctuary Choir and Mens Ensemble, and with the Harmony Hawks Barbershop Chorus. Through barbershop singing, I reconnected with Craig Hughes a few years ago.

For all my classmates: the motto of our barbershop chorus is "Singing for a Lifetime," and I'm doing the best I can at that. Here is our quartet delivering singing valentines last Monday. You cannot imagine the joy these songs bring to the unexacting recipient. Cousin Buffy named our quartet Forget Me Notes, and it stuck.

I asked Craig if I could grab this photo from his Facebook post. I imagine that this was 1970 or so?

You received Bruce's email about our decision to extend the life of this website, so let's make good use of this. Many of you use Facebook or Instagram to post photos of your life and travels. Let's use this page to share them with classmates who don't do social media. It's easy: click on the photos link at the top left corner of the page. This will take you to the photos page and "Add your photos here." Click on this, add your photos, and they will be credited to you. Add caption to tell our classmates about the photo. (To prevent possible hacking, I have to approve photos before they will show up for others to see. The website will notify me.)
If this photo makes you curious, go to the gallery to learn more about it.

I am working on creating a Gallery for the reunion photos, and running into issues. I'll let you know when it is ready.

Craig and I both continue to enjoying singing, Craig with Barbershop choruses in Southern California, and me Cedar Rapids with the Harmony Hawks and my church ensembles. Here's a photo of Craig's San Diego chorus from a recent performance.
