Comments:

The summer of 1979 saw me moving to Washington, D.C. to work for the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a Fingerprint Examiner in a specialty unit. After a brief stint while assigned to a specialty unit that contained thousands of unique prints (criminals with few fingers or no fingers, footprints, diplomats family members) I learned that one would not move up the Civil Service ladder without a college degree so 1982 saw me enrolled at Austin Peay State University with a declared major in Criminology. Life happened while at Austin Peay, I met the man who would become my husband and joined the Army while pursuing my degree. While Murf was in Korea I transferred all my credits toward a degree in nursing and we moved from Clarksville to Newport News, Virginia. Our best experience while in Virginia was when we became parents to Abigail in August of 1988. Life then took us to Fort Polk, Louisiana where Matthew and Elizabeth were born. Operation Desert Storm changed our lives again and Murf and I were deployed simultaneously, my orders took me to Fort Bragg, N.C. and Fort Benning, Georgia as a backfill nurse and the Transportation Corps sent Murf to Fort Hood, Texas for several months. After the war, our paths took another turn, this time toward the civilian life and we decided to move to Dickson with our three small children. Nursing has remained my profession and I am truly blessed to be in the line of work when you see people at their absolute best and their absolute worst and you know that at the end of your shift that you have made a difference in your patient's life. So even though the destination of my original dream has made a detour, the most important thing is that I have enjoyed the journey! The very inspirational and talented Erma Bombeck summed it all up with "When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say I used everything You gave me".

Helen Pickens Murphy has left an In Memory comment for Dianna Pollard.
Feb 21, 2019 at 4:33 PM

Dianna was one of my sweetest, lifelong friends. She maintained such a positive attitude despite the hurdles that she faced during her short life. The joys of her life was her sons, may each of us shower them with prayers as they nagivate life without their Mother.... Embrace friendships everyone.

This poem makes me envision the great Homecomeing that she had when she took her last breath in her earthly body:

Gone From My Sight

I am standing upon the seashore. A ship, at my side,
spreads her white sails to the moving breeze and starts
for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength.
I stand and watch her until, at length, she hangs like a speck
of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.

Then, someone at my side says, "There, she is gone."

Gone where?

Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast,
hull and spar as she was when she left my side.
And, she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port.

Her diminished size is in me -- not in her.

And, just at the moment when someone says, "There, she is gone,"
there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices
ready to take up the glad shout, "Here she comes!"

And that is dying...

September 3, 1983 wedding of Venita Helen Pickens and 1LT Maurice Patrick Timothy Murphy, Jr, United States Army Transportation Corps. Our wedding was the first and ONLY military wedding ever held at the Dickson First Baptist Church! It was quite a feat to carry it off as the deacons had to meet several times with concern about the ceremonial swords that were used during the reception. The mural on the wall behind us is especially poignant as it was hand-painted by a very special family friend, Ruth Tune. She was one of the sweetest Christian ladies I've ever known.

Here I am at a military party while stationed at San Antonio, Texas. Spring 1989. Mr. Carl Pettus would have been proud to know how much he impacted my life with his ability to teach history and to make it actually ENJOYABLE! Who would have ever thought I would have minored in Military History?

One of the best aspects about the military is that you will certainly make friends that you will have the rest of your life! This image was taken while our unit was in the field, a hot and dusty place known as Camp Bullock, Fort Sam Houston, Texas in the Spring of 1989. L to R: Lt Miller (Army Nurse Corps), Lt Venita Helen Pickens Murphy (Army Nurse Corps), Lt Ruth Newberger (Army Nurse Corps), and Lt Brent Nix (Army Medical Corps/Social Worker).

This is our beautiful daughter, Abigail Kathryn Murphy, DCHS class of 2006. She was born 7 & 1/2 weeks early and taught us what an absolute blessing it was to become first-time parents! She is attending Belmont University in Nashville as a Biology/Pre-Med major. She's aspiring to work in the field of Neurology or Obstetrics & Gynecology. Her dog, Shya had been Abby's constant and loyal companion since kindergarten. Shya passed away in September 2008 at the age of 15 yrs.

This is our wonderful son, Matthew Patrick Murphy, DCHS class of 2008. He's attending Austin Peay State University as an Electrical Engineering Major. He's following in his Grandpa Murphy's footsteps as an Engineer. He recently built the receptor for a biofuel being produced from Algea and Bacteria as part of a research product being developed at APSU. The project was featured at the March 2009 Science Expo held in Washington, D.C. The sky is the limit for this handsome guy!
