• Fort Pierce Central High School begins the 2008-09 academic year at a brand new campus. Designed around a central courtyard, it features small learning communities within each of three academic buildings. The high school’s 38-year-old former building on Edwards Road was demolished this summer.

• Fort Pierce Central was the first school in St. Lucie County to experience court-ordered racial integration, when students from Dan McCarty High School and segregated Lincoln Park Academy started classes at Central in fall 1970.

• Just 15 months after opening in 1970, Central became the only Treasure Coast school to complete an undefeated, state championship season in football. The Cobras defeated Tampa-Robinson 29-13 to win the 1971 Class 4A state title and finish 13-0. Central also is the only area team to open with 10 consecutive winning seasons.

• Central football players who went on to the NFL include Terry Beauford, Willie Broughton, Eddie Edwards, Jerry Johnson, Don Latimer, Alonzo Mitz, Wonderful Monds, Clarence Weathers and Robert Weathers.

• The school’s Cobra Café serves lunch to community groups and civic organizations as part of Central’s culinary arts program.

• Central’s Honors Central Program allows students to graduate with an associates of arts degree together with a high school diploma.
