Cathi Lou Cox VIEW PROFILE

2-11-51    10-19-65

Cathi was the daughter of James W. "Breezy" Cox, who was the Assistant Principal for Instruction our Sophomore and Junior years. She was killed in an auto accident in eighth grade.

This memorial page was in the 1966 Panther yearbook:

On the evening of October 19, 1965, while on the way to a youth church activity with her sister and brother, Cathi Cox was killed in an automobile accident. Cathi, an eighth grade student, was a member of the Band and Debate Club. Cathi was new to Lake Jackson Junior High this year; her previous years of schooling, from kindergarten through seventh grade, had been at Freeport. Although she was here for only a short time, Cathi was known and liked by many students.

This Amiable young girl, who always depicted the best that life had to offer, as very zestful and lively. Her friends considered her sweet and easy to get along with.

She will be missed greatly by the entire student body, but she will be remembered most by the eighth grade class who lovingly dedicate their section of the 1966 PANTER to Cathi.

Many of us remember Cathy because she was the first introduction to our own mortality; Yes, grandparents died, but how could someone so young be taken with such finality? I still remember the vacant chair in band class after we were seated the next day.
Decades have gone by & only this year did I finally thin out my 'memory book' that contained the same obituary on the previous page. Cathy was such a great cut-up and she'll always be remembered fondly.

I remember Cathy well. I was also supposed to attend the same church activity she was on her way to, but for some reason I couldn't go. When I heard about the accident, it struck home much more than if I hadn't been planning to go. I also remember only a day or two after her death, we were in junior high choir and the choir director had us singing "Smile Though Your Heart is Breaking." There wasn't a dry eye in the room, and I thought it was cruel of the director to make us sing that song so soon after losing a classmate.

Cathy, you are always missed. Too young to leave us.

Just as Dana said, Cathy's death was one of our first experiences with the finality of death. I remember the whole class crying during our gym class for about a week. Mrs. Tousant was our teacher and had been close to Cathy. The tears just wouldn't stop for any of us.

Cathy lived down the street from me in Freeport. We went to church together at Velasco Baptist Church. We played together growing up, stood at the bus together and played clarinet together. I miss her deeply. After her death I always had dreams that she was still alive. As I got older the dreams came slower. The last one I had was in 1978. She is always in my heart.

I still have every note she ever wrote me in school, all the newspaper clippings are kept in a box.  I've never forgotten her and never will.  Though she was not my first experience loving a dear friend, loosing Cathy was a pivotal moment in my life.  I remember so vividly so many details .... and yes I too still miss her.
