Frances Ogden Snelgrove completed her earthly journey and went to be with her Lord and Savior on December 14, 2016. Frances was born on March 12, 1920, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, to Hamer and Rhoda Marcella Ogden. She graduated from Hattiesburg High School at the tender age of 16 and headed to New Orleans to attend Sophie Newcomb College. After one year, she transferred to Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, where she graduated in 1940. She returned to her alma mater in Hattiesburg for her first teaching job and was later hired in Louise, Mississippi. While in Louise, Frances met the love of her life, Alfred Gregory (A.G.) Snelgrove. They were married on November 12, 1942; Frances stayed in Hattiesburg while A.G. served his country as a Sergeant in the Dixie Division of the U.S. Army during World War II.

After the war, the couple went back to Louise, where A.G. farmed. In 1953, he accepted employment with Dow Chemical Company, so they packed their belongings and three children and moved to Lake Jackson, Texas. Frances began teaching English at Clute Junior High before being hired to teach Latin at Brazosport High School. In April, 1958, the family celebrated the arrival of youngest daughter, Cindy. Frances completed her teaching career at Brazoswood High School before retiring in 1976. Throughout the years, she often received letters from former students, telling of the positive influence she had had on their lives; and how knowledge of Latin had helped them in many varied occupations. An avid sports fan, it was not uncommon for Frances to give extra credit on tests following victories over rivals Baytown and Galveston Ball High! She always looked forward to attending Class Reunions, seeing her beloved students, and reliving special memories of her teaching days. One of the highlights of Frances’ life was being named a Fulbright Scholar to study at the American Academy in Rome during the summer of 1967. This experience greatly enriched the wealth of information she shared with her students through pictures, slides, books and memorabilia she brought from Italy. Frances was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church in Lake Jackson, having been a Sunday School teacher for many years, as well as serving on numerous committees in leadership capacities. Her association with the Eta Omega Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and Brazosport Area Retired Teachers brought great joy to Frances, and she cherished the friendships with other members. In addition, Habitat for Humanity held a special place in her heart, as building Habitat houses was one of A.G.’s most coveted roles; her support of his endeavors was steadfast. Best known and remembered for her ever-present smile, sweet spirit, and strong faith, Frances was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, teacher, and friend. She was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, A.G; daughter Beverly; her parents, and siblings. Survivors include son Greg and wife, Pam of Fredericksburg, TX; daughters Jeanette and husband Ken of Meridian, TX; and Cindy of Gonzales, LA; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. Pallbearers will be Dial King (grandson), Hunter King (great grandson), Bill Cox, Gilbert Bohuslav, Bill Leshikar, Tommy Kerr, and Andy Wheeler. Honorary Pall bearers will be: Members of the Brazosport Retired Teachers and Eta Omega Chapter Delta Kappa Gamma Organizations.

Visitation is scheduled for 5:30pm until 7:30pm Friday at Lakewood Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be 10am Saturday, December 17, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church of Lake Jackson with Rev. Peter Cammarono officiating with Cindy Snelgrove assisting.
