In Memory

Jean Colwell

Jean Colwell Personette, 63, died on Monday, November 26, 2007, in Mt Pleasant, South Carolina at the Hospice Center there.

Laurie Knowles Carter recalls that it was probably in 1998 or 1999 when they went to Savanah and Charleston together that Jean had a "terrible cough."

Her family convinced her to go to the doctor, who diagnosed lung cancer. She had a long struggle with the disease, yet "never did stop smoking," said Laurie.

Tina Heslin McCaffery maintained close contact with her as she dealt with her illness. Jean was determined that she was going to play with her grandchildren and she lived to see her two daughters marry and have four children between them, all of whom Jean got to know and love.

Jean traveled to Cambridge to the last reunion, held in June, 2004 in Cambridge, Mass. and attended by about 20 classmates.

"We had a wonderful brunch overlooking the Charles River with Nancye on Sunday. She was fairly frail then and a little unsteady on her feet. But she enjoyed it all very much," especially reconnecting with old friends from the Class of 1962 at GRHS, said Laurie.

Tina and Laurie attended her memorial service held in Charleston, S.C. in January, 2008. She left her husband John, daughters Karen and Lauren and their husbands, plus four grandchildren.
