50 Year Reunion

DETAILS

GRHS CLASS OF '62 REUNION UPDATE

Four weeks and counting, classmates, until we gather over the weekend of Oct. 12-14 to celebrate our 50th high school reunion and share memories, laughter and good times with each other.

The committee has worked hard to make this a memorable event.  What follows are a few final details for you to consider as we anticipate a fun-filled time.

— Forest Avenue School alums will visit the school on Friday, Oct. 12 at around 2 p.m. Susan Miller Havens is coordinating the visit with the school principal, who has invited us to meet with students and share memories of "the good old days" when we were kids.

— The Friday evening gathering at Fitzgerald's on Herman Street includes an open bar and buffet. Casual attire. $50 all inclusive.

— Audrey Danaher Kole has confirmed the Saturday, Oct. 13 tour of the old high school building, now called the Ridgewood Avenue School and housing grades 3-6. It will take place at 11 a.m.,  and since a car wash will be going on at that time, we will not be charged to have the building opened and someone at the car wash will show us around. I plan on contacting the Glen Ridge Paper, if there still is one, and request coverage of this "historic" event. Otherwise, I hope someone in our group can take a photo, which we will email to the paper. The committee is also looking in to restaurants in the area that might be able to accommodate a group of 20 or so, in case we decide we'd like to go to lunch after the tour.

— Saturday afternoon may be a good time for you to visit your old neighborhood and house, if you like. Susan has found a couple of websites that provide information on houses. I will include them in an email i I am sending to the class.

— Saturday evening's dinner at the Essex Fells CC is dressier than Friday's, but not formal. Plan on wearing something you would wear if going out to dinner at a nice restaurant. No jeans, please, since they aren't permitted at the club.

— We will have a memorabilia table, so dig out the old photos and scrapbooks and bring items to share. Please be sure to put your name on your "stuff" so it can be returned to you.

— There will be a mike set up and during breaks in the music, we hope classmates will get up and share special stories and memories. No pressure, obviously, but it will be fun to hear your recollections of days spent at GRHS.

— Scott Whitcher has sent me a recording of our graduation ceremonies and we will have that there that evening to listen to. Karen Stanford Marcus' husband Joe has scanned all of her Viewpoint of Youth columns that she wrote for the GR Paper. We'll have copies of those for you to read, too. Interesting to read about who was dating whom, what movies we went to and who hosted "hen parties" and Sweet 16s.

— While no specific plans have been made for Sunday as yet, we may gather for coffee/brunch at the Marriott Courtyard in West Orange, where a number of classmates are staying. Any thoughts on that, please let us know.

— Check the list of classmates coming or registered to come on the website, and if you know someone who is not on the list, please contact them and encourage them to join us. We only reach 50 once, and who knows whether we will all ever gather again.

— Finally, if you have not sent your checks, please do so by October 1 to Fran Durino Varley, 46 Cypress Point Lane, Jackson, N.J. 08527. It is $50 for Friday's event, $100 for Saturday's and $150 for both.

Looking forward to seeing you all. Stay well and healthy!

Go Ridgers!

Fitzgerald's Pub on Herman Street, Glen Ridge (the former A & P), across from The Store, our one-time hangout.

$50, all inclusive, including tax and gratuities

Saturday, Oct. 13

Tour of the old Glen Ridge High School, Ridgewood Ave., 11 a.m.

A custodian will meet us at the school and let us in so we can wander the halls and reminisce. Thanks to Audrey Danaher Kole for arranging this.

Later in the day, wander Glen Ridge on your own or visit your old home. Susan Miller Havens has information on locating the names of your old home's current owners, which we will provide.

Festive 50th Reunion Cocktails, Dinner and Dancing, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Essex Fells Country Club, 219 Devon Road, Essex Fells, 07021

A four-hour open bar, cocktail hour and three-course dinner event with music provided throughout the evening by a talented musician.

Menu includes a cocktail hour with cheese and fruit station, several hot hors d'oeuvres, followed by sit down dinner, featuring salad, rolls, butter, choice of waitress-served filet or salmon entree or vegetarian option (tell the waitress your choice that night), dessert, coffee or tea. Music throughout the evening for background and dancing.

A memorabilia table will be available, so please bring your items to share. A photographer will take photos of the event to upload on the website for purchase later.

While everyone loves wearing jeans - or dungarees as our dads called them - the club has a no-denim policy. So please plan on digging out your best dress slacks for our reunion. Hope no one minds, but dressing up on this special night should be fun.

$100, all inclusive, four-hour open bar, hors d'oeuvres, dinner and dancing, including taxes and gratuity.

The total cost for the weekend is $150, which will also help defray costs to open the old high school and for deposits made to the musician by Jane Wahl Nugent and the cost of running the website by Nancye Davies Tuttle and her husband John Tuttle.

At the reunion, we will discuss interest in maintaining the website since the Tuttles have taken on the cost for the past 15 months.

Fran Durino Varley has agreed to be the treasurer for the reunion.

Checks should be made out to her with GlenRidge62 Reunion on the memo line. Your option is $50 for the Friday event, $100 for the Saturday event, or $150 for both events.

Send your checks to her at Fran Durino Varley, 46 Cypress Point Lane, Jackson, N.J. 08527.

The deadline is Oct. 1 for reservations so that we will have a final count to share with vendors and enable us to make final plans.

Please contact Nancye, Jane or Audrey with your questions. You can email them through the website.

We've worked hard to make our 50th reunion memorable and look forward to seeing you all in October.

Take care and have a happy, healthy summer!

Jane, Audrey, Nancye and Fran
