Living, happily at the Beach, for about 25 years.
Recovering Alcoholic, cancer patient(prostate)and, just lately, stroke(Hemorragic) attack victim.
Tennis player, family participant (daughter and sister live at Beach; walk or bike ride almost every day that I don't play tennis.
Still in pretty good health.
Betty and I started a radio/answering service in Greensboro in 1964 and ran it, with a lot of help from family as well as wonderful employees until we sold it in 1984, as a result of my Director work on the national level of our industry, and retired to the Beach.
We have traveled extensively since then, throughout the US as well as Europe several times. In the US, we used an Airstream trailer, often (probably the only one you ever saw pulled by a Lincoln car)!
We have driven across the US at least 3 times, with and without the trailer...
Betty was nice enough to stay with me after I developed into a full-blown alcoholic(I know, some of you had thought that for years :-)and my recovery was aided so much by being out of the work force and walking the beach...It has been over 25 years since I tasted (or wanted!) alcohol).
We have had several exceptional experiences, two of them related to my illnesses: first, when I was diagnosed with Cancer (actually, the PSA test indicated cancer, but in those days, they won't take another test for 3 months)we went to NY City and rented a furnished apartment and then, spent 3 months walking the most exciting city (outside of Paris???)in the world.
This experience has been the most exciting in my life! I loved NYC, but I was not working and had spending money, so it is different than for a lot of people.
We met quite a few interesting people there, some of whom are still close friends...some of them we met through my new addiction: tennis playing.
Some of them we met through our new spiritual studies: that of Unity Christianity Studies, so you can see that all was not "play" in the Big Apple.
Later, after the Cancer was fully diagnosed, we decided to undergo External Beam Treatment and the highest rated center was located in Stanford, California, so we packed up our bikes and took off for the almost three months of treatment.
And, exploration up and down the West Coast, with a lot of time spent in San Francisco.
We also met friends that we still see while out there.
On our way back to the East coast, I was able to take a mountain climbing course in Yosemite, which was exciting and proved to my own self that I could conquer at least one of my fears.
Later, after returning to the Beach, both of our children ended up living in the same development in Atlanta and we moved into a second home, there.
This was wonderful seeing our kids and their spouses and children.
In that city, while attending a Unity Church, we heard of Science of Mind studies and that has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my life.
(To be continued.....)
