Greenville, Mississippi - Barry Crosby killed in action

The Army has officially notified Mr. and Mrs. Henry T. Crosby of 1250 Arnold Ave. of the combat death of their son, Spec. 4 Robert Barry Crosby.

He was reported missing in action in Vietnam Sunday after a vehicle in which he and other soldiers of Troop D, First Air Cavalry Division, Ninth Cavalry Squadron, were riding was destroyed by a land mine.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete pending the expected arrival of the body in Greenville next week. Wells Funeral Home will be in charge. Crosby, 23, had joined the Army last June. His company was fighting near Phước Vĩnh, Bình Dương, South Vietnam, when he was killed.

He was a graduate of the McCallie School for Boys at Chattanooga, where he was captain of the tennis team, and Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va., where he was president of Phi Delta Theta social fraternity. He was an Eagle Scout and held Scouting's God and Country award. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

Besides his parents, he leaves a sister, Mrs. Stuart McCloy, Jr. of Memphis; two brothers, Thome Crosby of Atlanta and Harold Crosby of Memphis; and his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Henry Crosby of Leland.

Crosby, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry T. Crosby of 1250 Arnold Ave., Greenville, was killed in Vietnam on Feb. 26 while serving with the First Air Cavalry Division. The dedication will take place at the north end of the field just prior to the homecoming game with the Darlington School. H. Thome Crosby, IV, Crosby's brother, will represent the Crosby family at the ceremony.

a note by Lawrence Wood, December 26, 2015, in a 2012 article about the church in Greenville

This afternoon we visited the Mississippi Vietnam Memorial in Ocean Springs. While walking slowly in front of the wall listing Mississippians who died in Vietnam, I suddenly stopped as I was letting my eyes scroll down the list of names and was stunned to see the name ROBERT BARRY CROSBY. Wow, I thought. I conducted Barry's funeral at First Presbyterian Church in Greenville, MS. I can still see his parents, Henry and Susan, sitting in the first pew, tears streaming down their cheeks as Barry's flag-draped casket was rolled down the center aisle and our organist played "The Battle Hymn of the Republic". The parents had received Barry's last letter from Vietnam the day of the funeral! The entire day is etched in my memory. At the end of the service we sang "Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee", and Henry and Susan sang while sobbing, but crying in faith.

                                                      Rest in Peace, Barry....

note: At Washington and Lee University there is to this day, a scholarship fund in the name of Robert Barry Crosby.

The Robert Barry Crosby Scholarship was established in 1970 in memory of Robert Barry Crosby, Class of 1968, by his classmate Samuel Gates Shaw and the Shaw Family. Crosby was killed in action on February 26, 1970, in Vietnam. The income from the gift is to be awarded annually as a grant to a law student, or students, who demonstrate strong qualities of character and academic motivation, with preference to be accorded to a native or resident of the State of Mississippi.
