School Story
Gloria and I are doing very well. We left Hershey after surgical training and spent 16 years in Chicago when I joined the faculty at Northwestern. I was recruited to Southwestern in 1998 as a Division chair, but later spent 12 years as Chair of the Department. I stepped down about two years ago and now have more freedom and less responsibility, although I am still very involved in my Associate Dean position managing medical school curriculum.
Our daughters are grown and are all working. No marriages yet. Julia is an Environmental Engineer and works in Washington DC with a group that provides consulting for foreign car companies. Her area is fuel economy and government regulation. Laura began an career in business and left when hedge funds went downhill. She went to the French Culinary Institute, became a chef, and is now an associate editor in New York City for Martha Stewarts Living Magazine food section. The youngest, Diana, is a food scientist and works for Kellogg's in Memphis. She works in food quality, an area which is rapidly expanding with all of the food-associated problems that arise.
With the girls far away, Gloria and I sold our house three years ago and moved to a condo near downtown Dallas. We are avid opera fans and spend our free time traveling. We are going to France in October for 3 weeks for our 40th wedding anniversary. We doing both a northern and southern Viking River Cruise and spending time before and after in Paris and Nice on our own. It is interesting that we have been to Asia several times and most of Europe, but never France (except when Jimmy Carter sent me to southern France on the government paid cruise ship for 12 days). So we are excited to see Paris.
We love Dallas and plan to stay here for some time. My parents, 92 and 91, are still alive and live near us in Dallas. They are still in independent living but require considerable help. That also keeps us tied to this area.
Hope everyone is well and that those that get back to Hershey enjoy the weekend.
