I was in touch with Larry a few times a year once he graduated from U of Arkansas, but only managed to get together every now and then. A real pity especially since he moved to the DC area in the late 90's or so.

Overly blessed with people skills, Larry did great in sales at Oracle in the dot.com days, cashed out and worked with various internet companies. The work was just an excuse to indulge his love of sailing, kayaking (a steady habitue of the dangerous Great Falls on the Potomac just above Washington) and his family. He divorced and remarried having 2 sons from each marriage.

Apparent cause of death was a heart attack just as he pulled down the sails after a regatta in Florida with his wife. Astonishingly sudden for a man who seemed to have found the eternally lucky charm.

Memories too many -- and some too sordid -- to fully relate. 1st grade together in Miss Olneck's Indian Trail class. Shared a locker with him through most of high school. Cruised together in the HPHS halls whistling Tull's "Bouree", cruised around town in his Corvair, cruised in the backstroke lane of the pool where he starred tho training at only half speed.

Looking back can be a bitch.

Parts of this are from an obit posted about Larry prior to the service remembering him on March 17, 2007.

Larry was a great guy with a truly infectious grin. I knew Larry in high school and became reacquainted again later when we were in our 40’s through mutual friends at Chicago Yacht Club, including Larry’s older brother Tracy, whom like Larry, is also a terrific guy, an avid sailor and a fierce competitor on the race course, but vivaciously friendly at the bar when the race was over. Larry was always on the leading edge of technology even in sailing. His latest endeavor was a very new boat called the Melges 17 made near Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. It was a two person boat and he and Colleen were able to combine two loves, being together and being on the water together, racing. In his memory a memorial Trophy was created and he is honored with an annual regatta bearing his name.

Larry was a beloved husband, father, son and friend, age 53, will be missed by all. Larry died suddenly on Sunday, March 11th, 2007, in Florida, after finishing a sailing regatta with his wife (and first mate), Colleen. He was blessed with his four sons, Kevin, Keith, Mac and Beau. His family includes his wife, his sons, his mother, Barbara Brand of Montague Michigan; a sister, Tyerrell Brand of Bethesda, MD; and 2 brothers, Tracy Brand of Holland Michigan and Jonathan Brand of Montague Michigan. He was preceded in death by his father, Les Brand.

His joyful nature, strength and intelligence moved everyone he embraced. He was a sweet good man. He was a wonderful husband and partner to Colleen. He was a loving and proud father to his four boys. He was a loyal and protective friend. He was a doting son and son-in-law. When we look onto Lake Michigan, White Lake in Michigan, or the Potomac River we will think fondly of Larry.

Sail fast, Sail safe, big guy.
