I have been teaching all of my life. I began by getting my teaching certificate at UCSB. I then proceeded to have a varied teaching career where I taught students at all levels from 1st - 12th in public, private, and prison schools. I earned my Masters's in Educational Administration at Cal State Univ, Los Angeles. In 1989, we moved our family (Kathy and Jeff) to Eugene, OR, where I earned my Ph.D. from the University of Oregon. (GO DUCKS!!!) We then moved to Cedar Falls, Iowa in 1992 where I have been a professor of Instructional Technology ever since.
We began our family in Glendora, CA, with the birth of our middle son, Jeff. When we moved to Eugene, OR, Chris joined our family. Chris was then the youngest and Jeff the oldest. When we moved to Iowa, Chris's half-brother, Wes, joined our family. He is the oldest son. Now they are all in their 30s with Chris as a salesman in Texas, Wes has opened a wonderful restaurant in Indianola, Iowa, and Jeff as an associate vice president for an international bank in New York.
Our treasures are our grandsons, Tyler (9) and James (7). It's fun to have such effervescent youth back in your life. They are rediscovering the world that you helped your sons discover decades ago.
One of my favorite past times is bike riding. More specifically, every July I engage in RAGBRAI. This is when I join 20,000 other cyclists from around the world to ride our bikes across Iowa. I have done RAGBRAI for the past 18 years on Team Flamingo. Lately, I have been riding in September to raise money to fund Kids Cancer Research through the Great Cycle Challenge. This past September (2021), I rode 200 miles and raised over $2300.
