Nancy Jenkins Spurgeon

Nancy “Mrs Nancy” Jane Spurgeon 79 of Houghton Lake passed away at her home on Thursday, January 25, 2018. Nancy was born January 18, 1939 in Lansing, Michigan the daughter of Roger and Florence (Shreve) Jenkins. Nancy graduated from Eastern High School. On July 14, 1960 in Lansing, Nancy was united in marriage to Mr. John “Jay” W. Spurgeon. Jay preceded Nancy in death on October 4, 2006 after forty- six years of marriage. 
Mrs. Spurgeon had resided in Houghton Lake since 1972, moving from Lansing. Nancy retired in 2006 from Houghton Lake Community Schools after many years of service as a Paraprofessional educator. She returned to Houghton Lake Community Schools as a substitute Paraprofessional educator. Nancy’s most enjoyable memories were spent with her family and the school children. She will fondly be remembered for her colorful and well groomed floral gardens and her immaculate yard. Nancy enjoyed crafting, especially sewing, basket weaving, painting and creating floral pictures from flowers harvested out of her gardens. Mrs. Spurgeon enjoyed her trips to Whitefish Point to gather rocks and drift wood. 
Surviving Nancy are her two loving children; Debbie K. Bell of Prudenville and Steve M. Spurgeon and wife Kim of Houghton Lake, her five grandchildren; Laura Spurgeon, Corey Bell and wife Sara, Eric Spurgeon and wife Sarah, Andrew Bell and wife Tracy and Shawn Omell, ten great-grandchildren, one sister, Janice Chamberlain and husband Francis of Dimondale, Michigan, one brother, Bill Jenkins and wife Cheryl of Grand Ledge, Michigan, plus many nieces, nephews and extended family members. Nancy also was preceded in death by her parents. 
Celebration services honoring Mrs. Spurgeon will be held Friday, February 2, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. from Houghton Lake Wesleyan Church, 5599 West Houghton Lake Drive, Houghton Lake, Mi. 48629, with Rev. Bryan Thompson officiating. Family and friends are encouraged to gather on Thursday, February 1, 2018 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Houghton Lake Wesleyan Church, for a time of sharing stories, memories and fellowship. Inurnment will be in Roscommon Township Cemetery.

So very sorry to learn of Nancy's death....I shall always consider her a very good HS friend,M.Ansley
