School Story:
I went from shy nerdy Chess Club lunches (and afraid people would discover I was still in Boy Scouts), to small parts in the school plays, to still more small parts in the school plays, to major roles in two big musicals (Brigadoon and Carnival). Those were my social highlights, which of course rank much higher than any academic highlights in my memory. I took mostly honors courses, and maybe I still hold the record for having taken 11 semesters of math courses, being an early "Mathlete." I was President of the International Club, where we were early recyclers of newspapers. And I'll always remember regularly walking into the library, talking loudly, and regularly getting vigorously thrown out by Ms. Chin before I got even a few steps inside. Also, I remember being sent to the Dean's office for having the temerity to kiss my girlfriend briefly in the hallway, which embarrassed both the Dean and me, because he knew my mother from the PTA (she later became a school board member). I remember taking a typing class, but have still never learned to touch-type, although I do type quickly. And I remember Moratorium Day, when we circled the school, holding hands, demonstrating that all leadership took was the ability to say "Gimme a "P'", gimme an "E," (then A, C, and E), and having people join in. And I've been a peacenik ever since.
