After four years at the University of Iowa, I moved to Chicago to attend Northwestern University School of Law. I have been in the Chicago area ever since--for 14 years I lived in downtown Chicago, and then just over two years ago we moved to Libertyville, Illinois (a Northern suburb of Chicago). I very much like the Chicago area, and after 16 years here, it certainly feels like home.
I still practice law at Sidley Austin (one of the largest law firms in Chicago and nationwide; we have approximately 1,200 attorneys), but since my kids were born, have reduced my hours and now work 3 to 4 days a week, primarily from a home office. I practice employee benefits law, which means I counsel corporations with respect to their 401(k) plans, medical plans, employment agreements, stock option agreements and the like.
My husband, Tim, also is an attorney; he is the in-house employee benefits attorney for Walgreens. He was born and raised in Chicago, and has spent his entire life here, apart from 3 years in Boston for law school. We were introduced by a mutual friend, and have been married for just over six years.
We have two kids. Ryan, our daugher, will turn 5 this month and is in her last year of preschool. Owen, our son, turned 3 in October, and is in his first year of preschool. They are delightful kids and keep us quite busy.
There is not a lot of time after family and work, but in my spare time, I am on the Board at the kids' preschool and also at a local Mom's Group. We also like to travel as frequently as possible
My parents recently bought a condo in the area (they still have their house in Madrid), so we have enjoyed having them closer part of the time.
