Larry Wayne Danehower

Larry died by drowning the July after graduation. I received this picture from a former classmate and friend of Larry's.

Larry always was quiet and nice when I was around him. He seemed so excited when we graduated. I wanted to believe that he was coming into his own. I was truly saddened when I heard that we lost him.

I remember that Larry loved to paint and was very good at his work

Larry was very quiet and reserved. I didn't know him that well, but was stunned when he died at such a young age. I documented it in my annual at that time because it made such an impact on my emotions. In July of the summer of 1970, Larry was the first of our class to pass away.

i remember we made larry one of our special people in the annual because of his fabulous artistic talent. i remember him coming to my house the day we made the pictures and how quietly pleased he was. and i remember being so shocked to hear he had died so soon. it seemed impossible that one of our 70 fellow graduates could be gone at such an early age.

I didn't really know Larry like so many of my other classmates did, but I knew enough that he left a really good impression with me on the type of person he was, which was a very nice, talented one. He was very quiet and reserved and those are wonderful qualities in any person. It's god to know that others recognized his artistic ability and saw the kind person he was.

I am here as a guest of this site, so that I could pay tribute to Larry. Larry actually had two best friends while he lived in Trumann, AR, between 1966-69. I was one and my friend, Steven Mitchell was the other. We were all aspiring artists and spent hours together, talking about comic books and creating characters.

Most persons aquainted with Larry would describe him as mild mannered, quiet, and very talented. Those were my first impressions, as well. He didn't say much around others, but was very talkative with his friends. The day I first met Larry was in the 9th grade, in the fall of 1966, at Trumann High. A group of students were gathered around watching Larry draw from the cover of a Marvel comic book, Avengers #4.

Although its been over 40 years, I will always remember Larry for his mild personality and artistic exuberance. We all shared a special time, each being on the cusp of our independence. Despite having known Larry a very short time, his memories seem to fill many summers of drawing, reading comic books, and enjoying the moments he gave us.

I recently learned that Larry's sister, Bonnie Lavonne, and his younger brother, Gene had died. This has motivated Steve and me to create a website in honor of Larry.  http://larrydanehower.com  We have written our impressions of the years we had known him. For those who have known Larry or if you are a family member, we encourage you to email us with additional stories or photos. (contact: Ralph Slatton)  We would especially like to obtain more photos of Larry for our site.
