The long story is on my website at Stevecoon.org. Just click on my CV.

Beth Strand of Ames and I met in graduate school at Iowa State in 1968 and were married in 1969. We have two grown children who are very successful, married and happy.

I retired from the Iowa State University School of Journalism in 2006 where I was head of the Electronic Media Studies (broadcast news and production) sequence.

Beth retired the same year from her antiguie restoration business The Finishing Touch. We moved to Tucson, but returned to Ames as our permanent home two years later.

I continue to do international media training as you can see on my CV. Beth stays busy art classes, exercise and our home association committee duties.

It's a good life.

School Story:

My mother always had an interest in literature and the theater. One year her performance side overcame my teenage resistance and she somehow persuaded me to wear green earrings to high school on St. Patrick's Day.

Earrings would be a common sight today, but in the late 1950s it attracted several curious glances.

What did you always want to do that you haven't done yet?

Nearly all of my international workshops in Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America have been program with lots of work and little time for sightseeing. Although I've seen lots of interesting places, someday I'd like to take more time to have a leisurely hour or two to really appreciate the locale.

Famous or interesting people you,ve met?

As a former broadcast journalist in Iowa, Minnesota and Washington, D.C., I've met many newsmakers. The list is a long and boring one.

What are your hobbies and how do you relax?

I study languages--some of which I use in my workshops. I also shoot video stories for my own enjoyment.

Your favorite vacation spot?

Tucson, AZ where we have friends and family.

What's the funniest thing that has ever happened to you?

There are too many to describe here. Let's just say that my wife, Beth, would be the first to say that I've made a fool out of myself on more than one occasion. Fortunately, nothing that has resulted in a permanent stain on my reputation.

What's your favorite memory of MHS?

I feel very fortunate to have spent my years at MHS where I found all my friends, classmates and teachers to be friendly and nurturing.

That atmosphere, I regret, is not as prevalent in too many public schools today.

I am so saddened by this news.  I considered Merle my best friend when I was in high school.  We often rode to school together with his father.  And we had lots of good conversations about many topics of interest and concern to teenagers in the late 1950s.  My prayers are with his family.
