Jim was born and raised in Napa. After graduating from Napa High School in 1965 he attended Napa J.C. He then served in the U.S. Air Force for three years. He graduated from UC Berkeley where he earned his Bachelor's degree and MBA. Since 1979 Jim taught accounting and marketing classes to both undergraduate and graduate studens at Holy Names University in Oakland, CA. He also was the director of the MBA program and chair of the business department. He treasured the time he spent teaching and advising students.
Holy Names University established the James Durbin Memorial Scholarship Fund in honor of his distinguished service and leadership at the university.
