Karen Book VIEW PROFILE

Karen died at age 16 was a passenger in a car hit by a train.  Was a classmate of NHS Class of 1965.  Karen according to a classmate seemed to be a quiet, shy girl.  Went to Silverado (she was in her speech and drama class) and would have been in 11th grade.  Three other students in the car were hit by the train as well.  It happened near the feed and grain store which was perhaps a mile north of First Street (general area has a car wash in it now.

Karen attended Alta Heights elementary school. I don't remember how far back, but I distinctly recall her in Ms. Lindsay's 6th grade class. She was friends with Marilyn Ellsworth, whom I saw her with a couple of times later. Karen was a beautiful young woman, dark-haired, fair-skinned, thin, delicate. I think had she lived, she might even have become a model. I remember the day after the accident, when one of the boys who'd been in the car (might have been the driver) showed up in gym class the next day with a big wound on the side of his head, looking very glum indeed. She fell into a time warp and never was seen again.

When I moved to Napa, in 1960, and started Silverado Junior High, Karen Book was my very first friend. I was shy, and she made me feel so welcomed. She was a very sweet girl, very beautiful inside and out. Her smile would light up a room.

I was on a snow trip the weekend Karen and her three friends were in the horrible crash on Jackson street, off of Main street, Napa. They were on the tracks when the train was suddenly there.

I read it in the Newspaper, after I came home from my trip...So very tragic and sad. She was too young to leave this earth. I cried and cried.

To this very day, I think of Karen often. And, to this very day, I visit her grave at Tulocay cemetery. It brings me great comfort and solis.

Rest in Peace sweet friend, I'll see you when It's my time...Much love Karen...thank you for your friendship.

You've not been forgotten...

Mary
