Okay, so I've written on silly things, now I'd like to make some comments of a personal nature. You never realize how much you miss something...till you have it no more! That means, home, family, friends and school. I loved Letcher Co. so much! It was mine! I owned my world that was around me. I couldn't wait till school would start. School meant sports, dances, parades, and friends. Oops! also, an education!!! I never thought that on graduation night of 1966, I'd experienced my last hurrah of FNHS! So sad, yet it is what life is about. I became busy, furthering my education, marriage, vocation and a parent. Before, I could turn around,.....40 yrs. had ticked
away. I want to go home now. But.....there is no home, no family, friends are gone and school, is gone! My heart aches to just belong to Letcher Co. again, know every body that lived in Hemphill, feel the excitement that I once felt of hearing the Pirate fight song and see my old friends as we once were! This is the heart of someone who has only the memories and you can bet one thing, they are engraved on this heart and as long as breath remains in this body, FNHS is alive within me. I pray to see so many of my classmates at the reunion in June!
My funniest memory of FNHS was always the bus ride home! I remember this one bus driver who was finally assigned to drive our bus to Hemphill and I actually thought they had hired a hit-man to control us. There were days he would pull off the road at Jr. Welch's and instruct us that "supper would be a little late"! This happened quite regularly. It wasn't me (cross my heart) it was always those kids from Grassy and Potters' Fork!! (only kidding)
Another memory that brings a smile to my face...Cowboy Wright!! I love football and we had such a good football team my senior yr...I tried to not miss one game. But....I think the night that Cowboy broke loose and run a touchdown was the best!!!!! That has to indicate how good we were! We had a very confident team! I bet Cowboy didn't think anyone noticed!!!
