OK, mates, as I've been off the radar, I'll catch you up here on when, what and where;
After graduating South, I moved to Harvard Square and began working at the Harvard Biological Labs where I dove into the combined worlds of art and science. I worked mainly for entomologists on NSF and NIH grants. I moonlighted illustrating scientific papers, then after two years of study at Mass College of Art, moved to NYC to earn a BFA at Pratt Institute in Communications Design. I gradually became a Madison Avenue agency Art Director working on Maidenform and Bristol Meyers products, (think Mad Men,1978) then joined Warner Bros Music for my dream job— to design posters, songbooks and record album covers (12" LPs- the good old days, right?!). My photography passion grew and to my astonishment, Nikon House gave me my first public show n Rockefeller Center.
While designing entertainment materials for TimeWarner/HBO years later, I moonlighted and reconnected to the sciences by becoming a founding board member to provide design, media direction and threatened habitats photography for The Rainforest Alliance based in NYC. During one visit in '89 to Costa Rica to photograph rain forests, I jumped on a but to Monteverde and there sat NSHS classmate Dan Perlman and his lovely wife Nora!! I'd always respected Dan, and that event kindled a friendship. (His natural history photography and educational work at Brandeis is amazing, by the way)
Since '91, I've freelanced in commercial and fine arts, married, left NYC for Seattle, rebuilt a MCM house, traveled to several "third world" countries, and after 15 years, divorced and re-partnered.
I currently illustrate for a variety of clients and lead workshops in various destinations on land and at sea. I am an adjunct instructor of photography at the University of Washington and Seattle Creative Academy. Still learning, growing my spiritual side, kayaking avidly, staying relatively healthy and loving life at 60.
UPDATE: Are we really 65? OMG...as David Byrne sings: "How did I get here?"
I celebrated being over-the-hill by visiting Cuba annually, participating at Burning Man, restoring a VW Camper and committing my life to helping people explore and grow their innate creativity.
NSHS for me was rather surreal. So was I. I had attended Warren and "North" for a quarter before transferring to NSHS, and was mostly shy and introverted at NSHS till later in my Junior year. Eventually I found my mojo, growing my passion for science and art, and truly enjoyed working on NSHS' Stage Crew, deepening friendships and weekending in the wilds of NH with my wilderness-loving classmates.
I was always amazed by the initiative and focused leadership of our classmate Jon Oshima, who somehow led our stage crew teams with uncommon maturity and vision. I was just a kid trying to find my way and contain my rebellion. Stage crew let me see what teamwork feels like, because I avoided all team sports.
I most remember and am eternally thankful for the friendship, compassion and support of Les Gediman, Val Cyr, Bob Arruda, Carol Bershad, 'Doc' Sutherland, Barbara Epstein, Bob Goggin, Pete Richter and Ruth Pitt.
That's my best story involving NSHS.
I will try hard to fly east to attend the NSHS 50th in 2023.

Hi Randy, I fondly remember the laughs you generated throughout our high school years. Your Groucho Marx was the best imitation any 17-year old will ever do. I do remember hearing that you went into science and for some reason I think it's in the field of Botany. Feel free to get in touch if you'd like to bump heads. I'm in touch with Oshima, Bruyn, Colt, and a few others now and again. Dan Perlman (who I think you knew back in the day) remains a good buddy and we have traveled together a few times. Cheers, Dave
