Junior or Senior History class, school trip, we (20 of us?) took a big yellow bus to Berkeley to hear Mario Savio speak at Sproul plaza. Very cool for lefties.
But THEN we went in the bus over to Oakland Draft board because there was a demonstration that day. Demonstrators chained to the doors. Suddenly CHP drive in on their huge motorcycles. Clubs came out. People down on the pavement. Dragged around. (none of us). Some of us rallied and decided to find our way to the bus. The tear gas was so thick I couldn't see a few feet. I have a whole B&W roll of this day, partial images of people in fog, a people bleeding from head wounds down their shirts.
Somehow, we all found the bus down a side street. I remember the driver making sure all of us were there before departing. I don't remember anything else. Here I am now, I must have survived.
