John POTTENGER

After WHS, I went to BYU then lived in Brazil for two years doing missionary work. Upon returning home, I completed my BA degree and then an MA, both from ASU. Afterward, I pursued and received a doctorate in political philosophy at the University of Maryland.

I taught at California State University-Long Beach and now teach at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, in both the undergraduate and graduate programs. I recently served two terms as chair of the department as well as 20 years as director of International Programs.

I have published several articles and three books on Platonic philosophy, Marxism, political theology, political hermeneutics, and religion and politics. And, I have conducted several workshops and seminars on civil society for the U.S. Department of State in Egypt, Morocco, Netherlands, Russia (both Soviet and post-Soviet), Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. University and other academic assignments have also taken me to Canada, China, Hungary, Israel, Kazakhstan (Soviet), Morocco, Nicaragua, Panama, and Romania.
