I was so sad when I heard the news about Tom passing away in 2011.  He was a dear friend in high school.  Glad we had a good time at the last reunion.  He was recovering from treatments before coming to the reunion as well......

I felt like I should say something.  Tom was a very close friend in high school from sophomore year on.  He was the happyest-go-lucky guy I've ever met.  We kept in touch via telephone for 40 years, he in SOCAL and me in NY.  I visited him a few times.  Unfortunately, Tom turned out to be his own worst enemy.  Cirrhosis of the liver turned into liver cancer.  After a liver transplant they found cancer in one of his lungs.  They removed the lung.  Everything went well for awhile, until maybe 2010, when they found full blown metastasis.  Tom was a construction superintendant. All this was going on after he had lost his job when CA construction had cratered.  He kept looking for work when he could hardly get out of bed.  Yet he never lost his sense of humor. I know because I talked to him a few days before he died.  He was still wise cracking.  He only cried once.

Thanks Pat.  He was a great guy.  His ashes were scattered over the Pacific with a few friends and relatives in attendance.

Tom and I had a few "study halls" together while in high school.  He was always so sweet and nice to me.  I was rather removed from the high school scene as I was working full time since my sophmore year  to help suppport my mentally ill mother and raise my little sister.    Tom always asked how I was doing and even would ask how my mother was doing.  He also would tease me constantly and I loved it!  Sometimes we would get too loud on purpose so we would be sent outside so we could really talk. One time, he bought me a little booklet on how to deal with the mentally ill.  Gosh, wish I had kept that as it would be hilarious to read as medicine has changed so much in the last forty-five years..  Thank goodness there are good drugs out there now.

I wonder if any of you know his family?  It would be nice for them to hear all the nice things we are saying about him.

Great post, Roger. After losing touch for so many years with most of our WHS folks, I was happy to reconnect with Tom on Facebook. And as with others here, so sad to hear of his passing. But - a very good guy who lived a good life.  And I had the very good fortune to have known him.
