Obituary Kay A Thompson of San Antonio, Texas departed this world and was welcomed into the arms of Jesus Christ on May 25, 2020. Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on January 6, 1946 to Gordon and Verna Stromberg, Kay was the eldest of two sisters. She attended schools in suburban Minneapolis, graduating from Robbinsdale High School in 1964. Kay then attended St Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota from which she graduated with High Honors and as a Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society member in May, 1968, with a degree in English and a minor in Spanish. After college Kay began her career in the education field, teaching at a high school in Hastings, Minnesota. While at St. Olaf Kay met her future husband, Dennis Allen Thompson. They were married on July 26, 1969 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Robbinsdale, Minnesota. Kay and Dennis moved to Wyoming in 1970 so that he could pursue a doctorate in physics. While Dennis pursued his graduate education, Kay provided primary support first at the University of Wyoming Library, then at the Dean’s Office of the College of Agriculture, finally becoming the Accountant for the Wyoming State Agricultural Extension Service. Kay and Dennis moved to the Rochester, New York area in 1982. While Dennis worked in Eastman Kodak’s aerospace endeavors, Kay stayed home, and gave birth on May 5, 1983 to their only child and the pride of her life, David Allen Thompson. While first and foremost Kay was a devoted wife and mother, she also carved out multiple careers of her own in the Rochester area. She researched, developed, and presented preschool and early school age courses of study at the Rochester Museum and Science Center. Kay then moved back to the public education field, and finally retired in 2016 from Wheatland-Chili High School. During all her years in Rochester, Kay was an active and contributing member of Trinity Emmanuel Lutheran Church, the Scottsville Free Library, and the Oatka Garden Club. In all of her endeavors she demonstrated a quiet reliability, a superior competence and timely completions. Indeed, faith, family, and community service were the driving forces over her entire lifetime. She was quietly successful in all of her endeavors. Kay loved to travel and went to her husband’s technical conferences on many occasions. She also took multiple cruises over the years primarily in the company of her sister Sue, and sometimes her husband Dennis. She dearly loved North Carolina’s Outer Banks and often traveled there with her extended family over the course of more than 25 years. Kay was deeply involved in planning her family’s move in 2016 to the Del Webb Hill Country Retreat near San Antonio, Texas. She was instrumental in determining the layout and finishes of their new retirement home. She managed and coordinated the cross-country move of their household in June of 2016. Following that she worked tirelessly planning for her son’s wedding the following year. Unfortunately, a month after the wedding she was hospitalized with total kidney failure. She was subsequently also diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, pulmonary fibrosis, and multiple myeloma. She fought a courageous battle with all of these conditions over the next three years. Her death was the result of complications after aortic valve replacement surgery which had been postponed for two and a half months due to COVID-19 procedures deeming her surgery “elective.” Through all of her health struggles she exhibited an amazing amount of faith, courage and strength, always doing her best to find joy in the life she had. To say she will be sorely missed by all who knew her is a massive understatement. She is survived by her husband, Dennis, son David and daughter-in-law Arielle, sister Sue (Robert) Williams, sister-in-law Rebecca (Gregory) Keebaugh, brother-in-law Roger (Peggy) Thompson, brother-in-law Gerry Hardersen and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Her final resting place will be next to her husband’s parents in Cannon City Cemetery in Minnesota. There will be a funeral service in the Boldt Funeral Home in Faribault, Minnesota followed by a graveside service, both on Saturday, June 27, 2020. The family requests that any memorials be given to Trinity Emmanuel Lutheran Church (761 Elmgrove Road, Rochester, New York 14624), the Scottsville Free Library (28 Main Street, Scottsville, New York 14546) or St Jude Children’s Research Hospital (501 St Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105).
