What I did to get kicked out of school.

Sometime during my senior year........a 1963 Auburn graduate, home from college,  took me to a party over in East Rockford. I can't even remember who it was anymore. It turned out to be a drinking party. Before I managed to take-off, I was unlucky enough to be in some photographs. I remember being called to the Principle's Office the next week, and being 'grilled ' by Mr. Wyeth. How he had the photos, I will never know.  I swore to him that I had left almost immediatlely, and had not had a drink.Others who were there confirmed that to him.

But he suspended me from school for a day anyways.  Just for being in the photos. Trying to explain all this to my dad was not pleasant.  At graduation, to make a statement, I childishly refused to shake Mr. Wyeth's hand when I took my diploma.

Am I the only 1964 Auburn Classmate who got kicked out of school for a day????

I was kicked out for three days

Dear Sue,

I wrote about this incident but can't find it on the web site. So here goes a little more detailed version.

I got kicked out for three days right at finals time. I was in NDCC (ROTC) and was at my locker getting ready to go home after last class. Two kids came up to me and started bugging me. One asked me my name and I said it's on my uniform, can't you read.    He said something and poked at me.  I pushed his arm away tearing his shirt. Then I called him a "shit stick"    The next thing I remember was spitting blood into the drinking fountain.

A teacher came by and took us to the office. The Dean of Boys kicked him out for three days and then looked at me and said, "You're out too."  Tears welled up in my eyes, "Why, I'm the one that got beat up."   He replied, "Well you swore at him and tore his shirt."    I thought that was the end of my life because I'd never get to take the finals.  Also my dad would NOT be happy.

I went home crying to my mother and she held me and said, "Honey as long as you're OK. Your dad will hire you. You'll be alright.." Mothers have a way with words.

My friend Steve Holcomb rode with me to school called me at home wondering what happened to me, he had to walk home because I never showed up.  He said he'd kick the kid's ass if I wanted him to.  Steve ended up being a Winnebago County deputy sheriff, but that's another whole story.

I'm still trying to figure out where "shit stick" came from.

{One night years later I was with my parents at the Twin Oaks Tavern on Broadway when some punk punched my dad.  My dad pointed him out  and I got into a fight with him in the bathroom. We ended up outside the bathroom in a hallway. I was sitting on his chest with his arm bent under him. I just wanted to get out of there. My mother saw what was going on and came over and kicked the guy in the head twice. I bet he never lived that down. Go Mom Go.  What a night. You''d have thought we were a bunch of hillbillies.  That's what parents do, stand by their babies. Thanks Mama and Papa. I love you.

Sue,

First of all, we want to see the pictures!!  Secondly, Bob Dixon and I were both suspended for smoking in the parking lot AFTER school (out by the auto shop).  Needless to say we had a lot of fun for three days!  I think about three other guys got mysteriously ill for those three days and we all cruised around Rockford having a blast.  We didn't take any pictures!!  Life was a bit different back then, wasn't it?

Yes...life was different back then.  Now I can hardly remember some of it. I am hoping we can all share what we do remember at the reunion, since we are bound to remember different things. I am  planning to take advantage of your free drink offer. Hi Skip!

Last time you beat me out of the "coming the farthest for the reunion PRIZE." You may win again. Although, I will go Portland, OR- Norfolk, VA- Chicago, to get there!

We should share contact info during the reunion. I am in LA sometimes, now that my son lives there. I also go down to San Diego to see my step-daughter & our first granchild.

Check out my Profile, I have just put on some new photos!

Hi Sue,

The drink offer is happily acknowleged.  I wish I had known you lived in Portland as our last Marine Corps reunion was held at my buddy's home in Tualatin.  Would have been fun to stop in and say hello or you could have joined us for a wine tasting tour.  Maybe next time.  You certainly don't know how to age like most of the rest of us do.  If anything, you are even more beautiful now than you were in '64.  You are one classy Lady and I look forward to seeing you this weekend.  Have a safe journey.
