Comments:

I like directing and acting in plays, in that order. I serve on the Person County Recreation Advisory Board and also serve as chairman of the Person County Arts Council. After losing my sister Susan in 2006 to lung cancer, I became active in the NC chapter of the National Lung Cancer Partnership now the Lung Cancer Alliance of North Carolina. We are committed to raising awareness of lung cancer in non-smoking women. Lung cancer kills more women each year than breast, ovarian, and colon cancer combined. I have learned more than I ever thought I wanted to know about this. There is much work to be done, and it gives me something to focus on. My brother Andy (class of '63) died in May of 2008 from a heart attack. I remain close to Susan's husband Gary Hicks, but not to my brother's wife. Such is the stuff Lifetime movies are made of! I have worked for Dr. Andrew Collins for 33 years, and we now have a new associate, Dr. Pedro Santiago. I think I'll be working until I die. ( I have to have money to spend on the grandbabies!)
We are blessed in that both our daughters live close by. Ashley, the oldest, married Steve Bailey in 2001. She teaches biology and AP earth & environmental science at Person High. She recently earned National Board Certification. She and Steve have two children, Sam, age 4, and Susan Claire, age 2. Kelly works at Duke in the department of surgery - clinical research, mostly in prostate cancer. She is in graduate school at Campbell pursuing her master's in clinical research. She just bought a house in Timberlake and will be moving from Chapel Hell (oops, typo) next weekend. They both graduated from NCSU. Both girls also teach dance at All Dancer's Workshop. We just returned from a trip to Germany and Italy, which was wonderful. It was just the four of us, like old times. Jamie was so good, following us around wherever we wanted to go. He keeps me sane, indulges my passion for live theater, and helps me look after my mom. We have been at Hyco for 33 years, and I can't imagine living anywhere else. We are members of Long Memorial UMC, where I attempt to sing in the choir. I sound GREAT with all those other folks! God has been good to us, in good times, but especially in the bad times. I am looking forward to seeing all my old friends at the reunion.
UPDATE: I have retired and am having a blast! Jamie is still working, but he loves it. We lost his Mom two years ago and my Mom March 20, 2014. I heard from several of you and I appreciate that. Ashley went back to work after Margaret was born as a teacher mentor. Most recently she is doing the biology teacher's maternity leave. She is an excellent teacher, but with three children she likes the mentor position better, as she has more flexibility. Kelly is still at Duke as team lead in GU Oncology Clinical Research. She teaches rythym tap at Christi's Dance School. She recently auditioned for and was accepted as a member of Footnotes Tap Ensemble, a tap performing company. We have a great time as a family.

School Story:

I wasn't exactly thin in high school, but I looked okay. Definitely fat and sassy now. I'm working on the fat, but the sassy is stuck like glue. I remember going with the Varsity Singers to Lake Junaluska to sing at the ADK meeting. Mrs. Berger was so proud of us, and we were pretty talented for a bunch of teenagers. I also remember Miss Elliott's history class, and English with Mrs. Johnston. I visit Ashley at school sometimes and it's surreal walking down the science hall, like nothing has changed.
UPDATE: I have lost 50 lbs and have a ways to go but I feel better and stronger. As long as I can play catch with Sam and chase Margaret I guess I'm on the right track. Actually, there was another woman inside me and I don't like her so I'm getting rid of her ;)
