James Verdale Fisher

James Verdale Fisher passed away on May 27, 2022, after a lingering illness and many hospital stays. While his father was serving in the US Navy, Jim was born on March 11, 1952 in Vallejo, CA to loving parents, Jim and Dorothy (Lyday) Fisher. Jim grew up in SLC, attended Olympus High School and earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of Utah. He enjoyed playing football at both schools and put himself through college working at Kennecott Copper.

A lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, he served a mission in Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas. Jim spent his early 20’s working on political campaigns where he met his wife, Lyn Udall. They were married in the Los Angeles LDS Temple on April 17, 1976.

He spent over 30 years in the quick lube and car wash industry and owned Texaco Express Lube facilities in Utah, Arizona and Nevada. After retiring, he did consulting work for Salt Lake City and taught numerous “How to Start a Business” classes at Welfare Square, LDS Business College and Salt Lake Community College.

Jim was a good neighbor with lots of friends in the Liberty Wells area just south of Liberty Park (also known as SLC’s “Central Park”). He served two terms as the Chairman of the Liberty Wells Community Council assisting the City to increase the number of small local parks and improving area sidewalks and street lights.

He took a lot of pleasure from his church assignments and helping elderly people, especially widows and widowers. Jim also loved travelling, motorcycle trips and watching science and math shows on YouTube. He was a true audiophile who collected speakers and loved playing 1960’s and 70’s music loud enough for all the neighbors to hear (whether they wanted to or not!). His greatest hobby was classical music; he played the piano beautifully and took lessons for most of his life.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents and survived by his wife, Lyn.
