Larry Whitney

Larry V Whitney passed away April 13, 2023. Born in Salt Lake City to Lavon and Lucile Steadman Whitney on September 20, 1951. The timing of his birth was tight as Lucile was busy bottling her final batch of peaches for the year and didn't want to go to the hospital until she finished. Her doctor chided her to "never do that again," so Larry was the youngest.

Larry spent his youth in the Holladay area where his fondest childhood memories included family trips to Yellowstone, Laguna/Capistrano Beaches, and water and snow skiing. He was an Eagle Scout and Olympus High graduate.

While still in HS, Larry enlisted in the Army Reserve and was ordered to basic training the fall of 1970. He attended the University of Utah where he met his future wife, Shonnie Alexander, also a 1970 Olympus grad who was unknown to him during HS; while memories may have faded, Larry claimed it was because he was so shy and studious and that Shonnie must have been living in the fast-lane. Upon his 1973 graduation from the U he moved to Denver, to accept employment as a bank examiner, and shortly thereafter was reassigned to the Salt Lake City Office. Upon Shonnie's graduation from the U in 1974 they were married and have 1 son, Alexander.

Love of family was paramount to Larry; he adored Shonnie, and his pride of Alex and his varying accomplishments was ever-growing.

Larry was always a banker, working as a part-time teller while in HS and while at the U. He enjoyed the opportunity to travel much of North America while representing financial institutions and government agencies. He earned a nationwide reputation for his abilities to identify and remediate complex risk issues. His immediate pre-retirement years were spent working at the Federal Reserve Board in Washington, D.C. Upon retirement he and Shonnie returned from their home in Fairfax, VA to the Salt Lake City area where Larry continued his love of powder skiing, learned to play pickle-ball, and sometimes crashed on his mountain bike.

Travel was part of Larry's life and he shared many travels with Shonnie and Alex as well as his brothers and their families. Favorite places to visit were: Maui, San Francisco, New York, Palm Springs and Seattle where he and his brother Brent graduated from the Pacific Coast Banking School the same year. He and his brothers often used the weekend between Larry's out of town assignments to explore nearby wineries. Favorite locations included wineries in and near Napa, Paso, and Santa Ynez. Stories of Brent's wine-trip adventures remain legendary.

Predeceased by his parents, sisters Twila-Lee Whitney and Barbara Shurtz, his brother Brent (Margaret), and Shonnie's parents. Survived by Shonnie, Alex, and big-brother Chuck (Susan). Also survived by sister-in-law Maridene Alexander, and brother-in-law Craig Alexander.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 21, 2023 at 11:00 am at Goff Mortuary, 8090 S. State St., Midvale. Friends are welcome to visit from 9:30-10:45 am. Larry will be interred at Holladay Memorial Cemetery, 4900 South Memory Lane, Holladay, UT.
