Robert's Eulogy

For those of you who don't know me, my name is Mary Scott West.

I met Robert for the first time in 1976, and saw him for the last time 20 years later.

Like many of you, I regret that we were out of touch these last 14 years.

My first impression of Robert was that he had beautiful eyes.  He was  intelligent, charming, and funny.  He was classy;  when I was leaving for Africa for 2 years, he came to my going away party with 2 bottles of wine, one for us all to drink  then, and one for us to share when I got home.

He liked my mother, and they shared some characteristics--they had good hearts, even if they were not perfect people (none of us are); they were both intelligent and funny.  Momma enjoyed being the center of attention, and Robert was an appreciative audience.

 Others' memories of Robert:

He would do anything for his friends.

I enjoyed every minute I ever spent with him.  He was good to talk to, good to hang out with, and always up for doing something fun.

Loving

Robert always made me laugh.  - talking - watching TV - normal things were always special because of him.

Love in his friendship.   I remember his laugh and his good friendship.

The chump slap on the back of my head that meant the school day had started for me.

Robert was one of a kind.

You always had a smile on your face, and we never failed to have a good time.

I knew that no matter what, if I had ever needed him he would have been there for me.  And I can now only hope that he knew that of me as well.

Dave McMinn--He was my best friend.  After school we would drive around.  If you needed something, you would have it, no questions asked.  When someone told a joke, he was always the first to laugh.  That funny laugh of his, where he would laugh and immediately run out of air, and bend over at the waist, and then laugh some more.  He seemed to be colorblind when it came to choosing friends, and 30 years ago, that was not such a common thing as it is now.  If you weren't colorblind when you first met Robert, you soon learned to be from his example.  So he helped a lot of us to grow up and to see the world in a different way.

And finally, a wish for Robert we all share, from David Arnold--"Let his soul be at rest for once."

Thank you.

Alas, we lost Robert.  Maybe it was long before yesterday.  He had so much potential.  He was loved by his friends and family right to the end. If you have a Facebook account, see the beautiful, heart-wrenching wish for him that Barbara, his sister, has on her page.

Robert,
I will always remember your laugh, the chump slap on the back of my head that meant the school day had started for me.  You were incredibly bright, hilariously funny and infinitely charming.  You are missed.

Regarding the question everyone keeps asking about Robert, Barbara says, "I'll fill them in sometime soon...but for know, I'm just trying to get from day to day."

Robert has always been one of the smartest people I've ever known.  Every conversation I ever had with him was as deep as any well or as lite as any feather.  Scarey serious subjects to silly, silly hillarity Robert was one of a kind.  I am so sorry to hear this news.  God bless Barbara and her family.  Many prayers and much love.

Robert was as funny as intelligent.  He was also one of my best friends in high school. I did not get the chance to see him after high school.  But I remember his laugh and his good friendship.
