Steven Buchanan

Although my family on both sides was from Sheridan, I made my SHS debut in 1983. Not knowing anyone except cousins Jeff Stevens,
Mike Cotton and a few others, I was alone on an island of myself. Everyone knew each other since elementary school and I kind of felt left out.

After a while, began to fit in a little going to Barton for concerts, Mid-South Wrestling and other events with others. Hung around with Jody and Johnny McClure, Mark Beauregard,Payton Bannon, Mark Avant and a few others. I value the good times I spent at SHS, and often think back to those days with a smile.

Graduated in 1985, soon after joined the USMC,
and after a good stint, returned to Michigan to
get my education and persue my dream of writing. I always wanted to be a newspaper man... well, I made it!

Over the years have written for many Newspapers, Magazines, websites and been published 5 times in book form. I'm very proud to write the "Shorty Stevens" series of young reader chapter books.
The books all take place in and around Sheridan in the 1930's featuring three best friends.
in 2008, "Letters to Frank D. Roosevelt" was nominated for a Newberry Award for Children's Literature Excellence. Thanks Mrs. Cook for the encouragement all those years ago!

Life is short. If you have a dream, go for it.
When my wife Debbie suddenly died in 2002, I decided nothing would prevent me from getting Shorty Stevens published. And it did in 2005.

Since then new bride, Melissa
has been encouraging, supportive and very proud of my writings, as are Kerrie, Will and Joe.

Cruising the town is something I still remember.
I try to explain to my two city kids what the thrill was, they just don't get it. But I loved it!

Mark Beauregard, Jody and Johnny McClure and I were always into something. Johnny knew I had a huge crush on Rhonda Anderton, and was always threatening to tell her while we cruised through Sonic. I was so shy and couldn't even talk to her.
Shiree Mauldin was such a sweetie! always very nice to me. Had a crush on her too..but who wouldn't?!

Untold Truths.... Modern West

More outgoing..I wish I mad gotten comfortable with the uncomfortable. In other words, been a lot more talkative, and a joiner of clubs and what not.
Would have met more people and developed other relationships. Thanks to Facebook, I've established friendships with people I knew in a small way back then. It's nice to day Hi and see how others have changed over the years.
