PhD Social Ecology UCI

Places I've lived since High School:

Spain - Junior year college
South Pas - taught there from 1974-76
Laguna Beach since 1977

Comments:

I married a Math major from UCLA who teaches at a local middle school. We love traveling, hiking and reading the LA Times! A wonderful woman in every way. She will be retiring this June!

School Story:

When Tim Stimphel beat me for Commissioner of Men. I loved his campaign strategy. He brought baby lambs to the mall so the girls could pet them. His tagline was "Don't let Hoffman put the wool over your eyes." I was beaten by a better campaigner!

Share your memories about other schools you attended in S.P.

Stinkin' Lincoln was awesome. That's where I met John Markytan who has been my best friend ever since. Why did they change the name? What's wrong with honest Abe?

My favorite "school days" hang outs or other places:

In junior high school, I remember going for a burger at "Johnnies", that little tiny grill on Fair Oaks. He was a profane SOB but a burger, potato chips and a coke for 25 cents, if you didn't mind getting yelled at!

What athletic programs, teams or activities did you participate in while you were at SPJHS or SPHS?

Playing C basketball with Coach Ward and Richard Kudo was definitely a highlight. Playing varsity bastketball with Tim Stimphel and Steve Knox was great. The only league game we won I got to play because several players (left unnamed) got kicked off the team for drinking.

What organizations, clubs or groups did you belong to during your school years in South Pasadena?

Bengals, Key Club, C, B and Varsity Basketball

Do you get back to South Pasadena?

Although my parents have passed away, a large part of my heart is still there. I see Mary Prickett (Markytan) in Pasadena and I cruise by the high school and shoot a few free throws for old times.

SPHS graduates I keep in touch with:

Markytan, Begin, Merrill, LeJeune, Kitty, Ann Meeker (Matyas), Frank Lloyd, Ian and Ted MacNeil. Working on the Reunion has gotten me in touch with classmates that I didn't hang out with and who are just wonderful: Tally Fischer (Leonard) and Heather Sager

What I always wanted to do that I haven’t done yet:

I feel very fortunate. I've done many of the things I wanted to do. Married the woman of my dreams, raised wonderful kids, became a teacher, lectured at the university level, taught high school in all sorts of subjects, became a tour guide and took a group to colonial Mexico for Day of the Dead.

My "Goals in Life" or "Hopes & Dreams":

I want to keep doing fun and creative tours. It allows me to be creative, find interesting places and stay teaching.

What or who influenced you most back in high school?

Helen Burr was the most dedicated teacher I ever experienced. I learned so much in her class that I waived lower division classes when I went to UC Irvine. That helped launch my Spanish teaching career and a life-long love of the language.

What or who influences you most today?

I admire Tom Hanks for his integrity and Bruce Springsteen for his passion. I feel grateful to be healthy and happy with a desire to keep contributing.

My Favorite Quote:

Tom Hanks - "Life is short but it's long enough to get right"

What bands or songs were your favorite back then?

Cream, the Beatles

What's happening in my life now:

After I retired from 36 years of teaching high school - Economics, Psychology, Spanish, American Government and Geography, I formed a urban tour company called Hoffy Tours. It's been a fun 6 years with about 5 tours per month: architecture, historic districts, beer tours, and, my most popular tour, Dia de los Muertos in colonial Mexico. Miss Burr would be proud. I'm passionate about giving tours and find that I still get to teach - just in a different environment.

I'm so excited about our reunion. Back in our old stomping grounds after all these years! Three days should give us time to catch up! GO TIGERS!

Joe was such a nice and humble guy in high school.  I remember he gave an oral report on cross country running and the proper stride for maximum benefit.  I never forgot how clearly he explained the concepts.  As with many classmates, I lost touch with him after high school.  What an impressive record of research, education and service!  Clearly one of our most accomplished classmates.  I was pleased to read of his interest in human rights and how he used his knowledge for the benefit of others.  What a life, Joe.  Thank you!

Here's my wife, Maria, and son, Chris on a recent trip to Ireland. Chris just landed a job in New York and lives in the Lower East Side. So proud! Maria is the love of my life and was happy to experience her Irish roots (we went to Italy too)
