I didn't know Glen except by sight while we were in high school. However, one of the unexpected benefits I derived from starting this class website in 2008 was getting to know many classmates much better. While tracking down information to include in its launch I had occasion to speak with Glen on the phone. From then on, we spoke from time to time and at the 60th were able to do so face to face. At that reunion we gave him a laptop so that he could join the site and enable us to interact in that fashion also.

Unfortunately, he was unable to successfully get everything into place and that never happened. We did, however, continue to speak on the phone.

Natalie helped sort out Glen’s changing phone numbers and other issues we had in being able to get hold of him consistently. Because of these difficulties I got the e-mail address of Glen’s daughter, Ellen, so that we could still communicate if phone problems arose again.

About a year ago Glen told me that he was undergoing radiation treatments for a recently discovered cancer and they were going very well, would soon be completed and that he felt great. He was very excited about the upcoming 65th reunion and said that he was definitely planning on attending. I would send the information that Priscilla posted regarding preparations for it to Ellen so she could pass it along to Glen. It was during these exchanges that I was getting a much different picture of Glen’s condition from her. It confused me but suffice it to say that hers was the more accurate.

As was our custom to call each other on our birthdays I spoke with Glen on March 15. He was his usual upbeat self, still enthusiastic about the upcoming reunion and anticipating with delight having some chocolate birthday cake that Ellen would be bringing over that afternoon.

I’m so glad I called.  On the 17th, just 2 days later, I get the e-mail that he had passed away that morning. I was shocked and actually became teary eyed upon receiving the news.

I’ll never forget how Glen always radiated unbridled optimism and, as a result, will attempt to incorporate that into my life as well. I am proud that he considered me a friend.

Rest in peace Glen, my friend.
