SPRINGFIELD - Richard W. Prouty, 66, died May 1, 2007, at his residence.

He was born May 28, 1940, in Brandon, the son of Margaret (Patterson) and Woodrow Woodruff Prouty. He was raised by his foster parents, Clarence "Stub" and Mary V. Bellows in Springfield.

He graduated from Springfield High School class of 1959.

Mr. Prouty was married to Emma Louise Hubbs, May 19, 1962, in Elizabeth City, N.C.

He joined the U.S. Navy and served 22 years as an aviation technician and on an aircraft carrier during the Vietnam War, retiring in 1981.

After his retirement from the Navy, he was employed for several years at Idlenot Dairy in Springfield and later at Strum Ruger in Newport, N.H., retiring full time in 1998.

Mr. Prouty was a member of St. Johns Lodge 41 F&AM in Springfield.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and birds.

Survivors include his wife, Emma Louise of Springfield; three sons, Richard Prouty Jr. of Springfield, Patrick Prouty of Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Hank Prouty of Newport, N.H.; two daughters, Deanna Punturi of Bluefield, W.Va., and Robin Prouty of Walpole, N.H.; his foster mother of Springfield; three brothers, Norman Prouty of Windsor Locks, Conn., Woodrow Prouty of Charlestown, N.H., and Michael Brown of Gorham, Maine; four sisters, Beverly Tiffault of Newport, R.I., Sharon Prouty of Portsmouth, R.I., Shannon Stevens of Springfield and Marie Hobbs of Mooresville, N.C.; a foster brother, Michael Bellows of Shrewsbury, Mass., and a foster sister, Jane Aremburg of Springfield; seven grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 7, at the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield. Quint Eastman of Springfield will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Johns Lodge 41 F&AM, Main Street, Springfield, VT 05156.
