Doris Vander Veer

Obituary:

Doris VanderVeer, of East Wenatchee, began a new journey on Thursday, February 21, 2008, after a hard fought bout with cancer. Doris was born in Sunnyside, WA, on March 15, 1953, to Ed and Shirley VanderVeer. She was a graduate of Sunnyside High School, Class of 1971.

Doris’ life as a mother started at age 19. After having her first child, she moved to Moses Lake, where she raised five wonderful children, each of whom she cherished with all of her heart. Doris moved to Wenatchee in 1999, with her oldest son. Soon after, each of her children followed her to the Wenatchee area. Doris taught those around her, the importance of love and acceptance. Never did she let any person leave her home without a full belly and a warm heart. Her term of endearment was cooking for all those that she loved. Along with being a devoted and encouraging mother, she was also strong and inspiring to all her family and friends. Doris touched the lives of many and will forever remain in our hearts.

Doris was preceded in death by her father, Ed VanderVeer. She is survived by her mother, Shirley Milburn and step-father, Bill of Issaquah, WA; sisters, Corinne O’Daniel of Richland, WA, Cheryl Kirkham of Kennewick, WA; Diane Hamre of Milton, WA and Sandi Morris of Kennewick; brother, Ed VanderVeer of Kennewick, WA; half-sisters, Amy Buchanon, Anni Jack and Amber Bolan. She leaves five children, Brad VanderVeer and Jerod VanderVeer of East Wenatchee, Joshua Inks and Megan York of Wenatchee and Dylan York, who is serving in the National Guard in South Carolina; and six grandchildren. We miss our mother very much and look forward to the day we get to be with her again. Mom, we love you, we love you, we love you.

My husband and I actually visited Doris less than a week before she passed on. She had been fighting breast cancer for about a year by then, when she called me up out of the blue. We were at Big R in East Wenatchee, when she called and asked us when we were going to see her again. We went to see her after we bought our items, since she wasn't too far from the store. She was living with her oldest son, Brad, and his family at that time, since she was too sick to work to keep her appartment. We had a nice little visit and as we were leaving, I told her that we'll try to see her again when we came back to Wenatchee which wouldn't be too soon since we lived a little over an hour away. She seemed so sad as she said,"That long!!" It was if she knew that she didn't have much longer to live. We saw her on a Saturday, she was back in the hospital two days later on Monday, and she finally died on Thursday. This happened in February 2008. Thanks for being my friend, Doris. Larry and I miss you!!

I met Doris in the third grade.  Mrs. Weaver's class at Kamiakin.  I always remember her as a cheery person.
