I married Elizabeth Ahrens on June 12, 1982. We've lived in a small city north of Boston for 35 years. Beth works with children as a clinical social worker. i had a 35 year career making documentary programs for television. I've also had success as a playwright, most memorably working with Ladysmith Black Mambazo on The Song Of Jacob Zulu, which earned 6 Tony nominations. I sold my half of my production company six years ago and have been working occasionally as voice talent and on-camera. I took voice lessons for the first time and now sing with three ambitious choirs. I'm the "Spielmeister" of my a cappella men's choir. I'm working on some personal writing projects and revising a play. Beth and I look forward to increasing our traveling. I've been back to South Africa three times, the last time with my family.
My years at Swarthmore were not the happiest. I had a lot of growing up to do, and I had not yet found subjects that I was passionate about. So I was an indifferent student. Directing the Hamburg Show my junior year (script by Mike Wing) was the absolute highlight of my college career. I developed a love for theater that has born fruit ever since.
Some years after graduating, I entered a PhD program in Modern European History at Boston University. Though I decided believe before writing a dissertation, I count those years at BU an important part of my "real" education.
Hi Howard, belated but no less heartfelt congratulations on your birthday. I hope you and family are well and staying safe. All the best, see you next year, Tug
