John R. Sherwood

Arkansas City – Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church here for John Robert Sherwood, 52, Arkansas City, formerly of Topeka, who was killed Friday, Sept. 11, 1998, in a one-car accident on US-77 south of Winfield.

He was born July 21, 1946, in Winfield to Edward B. and Rose Margaret Sharer Sherwood and spent his early life in Arkansas City and Topeka.  He was graduated from Topeka High School in 1964 and attended Washburn University.  He was an office manager for Southwestern Bell Telephone 31 years before he retired in 1997.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Arkansas City where he was an elder and sang in the choir.  He was a member of the Arkansas City Rotary Club.

He was married to Charlene Andy Anderson Oct. 2, 1970, in Lyndon.  They lived in Topeka, then in Texas before they returned to Kansas to live in Independence and Chanute, and then Arkansas City.  She survives.

Other survivors include daughters Travis Sherwood, Houston, Heather Steffen, Glenwood Springs, Colo., and Robin Bannister, Arkansas City.; his father, Edward B. Sherwood, Newton; brothers, Bruce Sherwood, Canon City, Colo. and Steven Sherwood and Art Sherwood, both in Wichita; and four grandchildren.

Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery north of Arkansas City.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church in Arkansas City.  Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home in Arkansas City is in charge of arrangements.
