David Max Derby majored in photography at THS. After graduation he enlisted in the US Navy on July 1, 1964 and served as a Photographers Mate. He served on the USS Catamount and the USS Princeton, each ship was deployed to Vietnam. After the Navy, Dave worked for and retired from Texaco in Southern California. After retirement he moved back to Topeka. Dave made several trips to Thailand where he loved to relax and enjoy life. He and David Munoz made a memorable excursion to Costa Rica. After his accident he was wheelchair bound but continued to fight everyday to become mobile again having survived multiple operations and stays at KU Med's Burn unit and other rehab facilities. Dave loved cars and has several vintage as well as unique vehicles.
