David G. Monical
Topeka - David G. Monical, 75, Topeka, died Tuesday, May 11 of cancer at his home, surrounded by family. Monical was born May 7, 1946 in Pittsburg, CA to David B and Mary Lee Everett Monical. Raised in several towns across Kansas, he graduated from Topeka High, attended Washburn University for 1 year and graduated from University of Tulsa. He held MA degrees from Tulsa and from University of Minnesota.
He worked for the Minnesota Higher Education Coordinating Board and Kansas Legislative Research Department before joining Washburn in 1984. He worked for John Green and all subsequent presidents of the university in numerous capacities overseeing the offices of governmental and university relations, institutional research, and alumni. He retired in 2010.
Monical served the community through membership on boards of the Topeka Convention and Visitors Bureau, Meals on Wheels, Greater Topeka Chamber of Commerce, and most recently the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library Board of Trustees.
Monical is survived by his wife, Peg Dunlap, Topeka; son Geoff (Marilyn) and grandsons Miles, Langley, OK and Michael Black, LA; brothers Bruce, TN, and Mark, FL; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, who delighted in calling him "Uncle Furface." He was predeceased by his parents and sister, Laura.
In retirement, he and Peg enjoyed golf, travel, cooking, reading and wines.
Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be scheduled in the future.
Memorials may be made to the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library.

Although I haven't seen David for some time, he was always a favorite of mine. I enjoyed his intelligence, with, and humor. I do remember staying up, at his house, into the wee early hours of the morning after a class reunion. I wish his family well...he was a special one.
