Andrew Joseph Ortega

Andrew Joseph Ortega, 53, Topeka, died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998, at a Topeka hospital.

Mr. Ortega was a purchasing agent for Combs Freight Air in Aurora, Colo., and he managed a restaurant.  He also had been a family counselor at the Rescue Mission in Lincoln, Neb., and later at the Topeka Rescue Mission.  He served in the Army Intelligence Corps during the Vietnam War.

He was born June 12, 1945 in Topeka, the son of Joan S. Gonzales Ortega.  He was graduated from Topeka High School and he attended Washburn University.

Mr. Ortega was a member of First Southern Baptist Church and he had been a volunteer at the American Red Cross for many years.

He was married to Gerry Ann Dunn on May 1, 1981.  She survives.

Other survivors include a son, Brett McKown, Lawrence; three step-sons, Todd Caldwell, Perry, and Mark Caldwell and Michael Willoughby, both of Topeka; his mother, Joan Ortega, Topeka; six step-sisters, Yolanda Ortega-Ericksen, Denver, Simone Alexander, Dallas, Corrine Darling, Chesapeake, Va., Deanna Martin and Michelle Ortega, both of San Antonio, Texas, and Margaret Bachmann, Pensacola, Fla., and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel.  Cremation will follow the services.  Mr. Ortega will lie in state after 6 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, where friends and relatives will meet from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday.
