Harold L. Spiker

Harold L. Spiker, 49, rural Shawnee County, died Friday, April 5, 1996, at his home. 

Mr. Spiker had been employed with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment since 1974.  He was section chief of Environmental Surveillance and Emergency Response Section.  He earlier had worked at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., and he served aboard the USS Goldsborough during the Vietnam War.

He was born Sept. 2, 1946, at Topeka, the son of Franklin H. and Mary E. Coe Spiker.  He was graduated from Topeka High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in physics at Washburn University.  He earned a master’s degree in environmental health science at the University of Kansas.

Mr. Spiker was a member of Susanna Wesley United Methodist Church and the Mid-America Chapter of Health Physics Society.  He also was a member of the Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors.

He was married to Carol Arrington on Dec. 31, 1971, at Lawrence.  She survives.  Other survivors include two sons, Brian A, Spiker and Brad A. Spiker, both at home; a daughter, Laura M. Spiker, at home; a sister, Carol L. Miles, Topeka, and his mother, Mary E. Spiker, Topeka.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Westlawn Memorial Gardens.  Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Susanna Wesley United Methodist Church.  Mr. Spiker will lie in state after 2 p.m. today at the Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home where relatives and friends will meet from 7 to 8 p.m.  Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Hospice Care, Inc., 200 SW Frazier Circle, Topeka, 66606-2800 or to Susanna Wesley United Methodist Church, 7433 SW 29th, Topeka, 66614.
