Favorite School Story or Funny Memory you'd like to share

During my Jr. year I was supposed to transfer to the afternoon shift. I was working. Had to keep my afternoons free. The only way I could find to get on mornings was to sign up for a class that was only offered in the morning - so I signed up for Hebrew. As it turned out, Mr. Shapiro turned out to be my all time favorite teacher. I'm sorry to report, however, that I don't know even one word of the language, but I still cherish my memories of Mr. Shapiro.

I was in school mostly because my Mother made me go. Sadly, I just put in my time to get out of there each day and get to work, or to see my boyfriend. Hindsight being what it is, I wish I had been interested in all the activities and such, but at the time I thought I was supposed to earn my spending money instead.

Favorite teacher(or teachers)?

Mr. Shapiro, of course.

What did you do after graduation?

Started working at Hughes when I was still 18. Retired from the same employer 36 years later.

Where else have you lived?

Thought of moving, but never found a place that had my family in it. So, I just stayed in Tucson.

Where have you traveled?

I've pretty much covered the US, but it was business travel. You only see planes, hotels and factories on business travel. Made several trips to Scotland and the UK for business also. Beautiful area!

On personal travel I've been to Jamaica (won't do that again...), the Meditteranean (on a cruise) and Mexico (on cruises). Got to swim with the dolphins in Cozumel.

Where is your favorite place to go?

At the present time - Phoenix, AZ. 2014: Well, now I live in Phoenix, so my favorite place to go is Tucson. Or, maybe Illinois where I have lots of family.

Favorite Movies:

Any romantic comedy.

Favorite Music:

Country; the oldies

Comments:

Started working at Hughes in 1970 and intended to be there just long enough to get married and start having kids.....so much for plans. 36 years later, I was fortunate to be able to retire. I enjoyed my time there, for the most part, but I was sure ready to get out when they opened those doors.

The good news is that I was able to keep most of my high school friends over the years. Jennifer Wagner, Ginger and Valerie Bronson, Kathy Riland, all of whom I still love dearly.

The reunion helped me make contact with others that I hadn't seen regularly, like Linda Sherrill, or for 40 years, like Beth Evans. You know, the kind of friends that you always love whether you see them or not.

Bobbe, Next year is our 55th year. Are there any plans in motion yet? Just wondering. Actually, Dave figured it out. He doesn't miss a beat. Hugs, Deb

My dear friend, Jennifer Wagner Barnett, passed away this morning. (February 24, 2023)

We were best friends from 5th grade on.  We grew up together, we skipped on the sidewalks on the way home from school, we polka'd around my parents dining room table to Judy Garland, we shared all our secrets, our problems, we made plans for what we wanted to do in our lives.  We planned to be sitting on a porch rocking our later years away together.  She was my friend I could always count on to be there for me, and not judge me, for almost 62 years.   Jennifer left way too early.

She is survived by her 2 sons, Brad and Brian.  They will advise when/if they have a Celebration of LIfe for her and I will post that, along with any obituary they might publish.

Well, it is hard to improve on Jack's and Danny's comments so I won'y try.  Like them, I met Scott at Steele Elementary and knew him during junior high and our days at PVHS.  We even had a few classes together at the Uof A.  As so often happens, we had very little contact after that, but I am glad to have had the opportunity to check in with him during the 50th Reunion.  He was just as I remembered him -- a kind, thoughtful guy.

Rest in Peace, Scott.
