T.U.S.D Honor Roll

Superintendent George F. García inducted the following individuals into the Superintendent's Honor Roll (1999-2000):

Dyer, Jon Fong, Ben Notheis, and Jeremy Adams, members of the Sahuaro Boys Basketball Team; Dick McConnell, coach; Bob Vielledent, assistant head coach, Steve Wharam, assistant coach; William Brock, Kevin Calloway, Torian Cox, Adrian Fernandez, Joey Haynes, Troy Hoover, Jason Jones, Jeff Knoche, Lamont Pickett (not pictured), Richard Sims, Joe Smith, William Thompson, Mario Ybarra, members of the Palo Verde Boys Basketball Team; David Gin, head coach; Mark Abatecota, Tim DeMarchi, Patsy Lee assistant coaches - The Sahuaro boys basketball team won its third state title in the Class 4A state championship defeating Sonoran region rival Palo Verde 72-59. David Gin was selected by the Arizona Daily Star and the Tucson Citizen as the Coach of the Year.

Calvin Dacus, senior at Sahuaro High School - Student football player who has overcome adversity to become one of the best receivers among Tucson high school football players. Dacus has caught 115 passes from Sahuaro quarterback Reggie Roberston during the last two seasons. According to the Arizona Daily Star, only one player in Tucson history, John Mistler, a Sahuaro star 24 years ago, caught more balls in a season.

Nemer Hassey, coach; Sahuaro High School Football Players: Earl Bowers, Chris Monaco, Noah Igegneri, Dillon Taylor, Will Halstead, Reggie Robertson, John Shaffer, Austin Given, Peter Gartner, Craig Boudy, Justin Tarpley, Ish Howard, Jason Hucks, Leon Kittrell, David Jackson, Brandon Butler, Tony Wingate, Matt Guzman, Thomas Plum, Mike Wells, Cameron Bell, Michael Rodriguez, Adam Cortese, Zack Ortiz, Aaron Lampert, Isaac Greenberg, Keith Thomas, Andy Gasparro, J.D. Trader, Danny Bockting, Andre Smith, Luke Brown, Scott Carner, Rolando Diaz, Charles Denson, David Lopez, Kyle Taylor, Joe Comstock, Josh Hill, Jeremy Preston, Justin Hosten, Ivan Luera, Robert Edminson, Mike Kingman, Calvin Dacus.   For the 14th consecutive season, the team competed for the state 4-A championship title. Sahuaro lost the title to Scottsdale Chaparral but finished with an 11 and 3 record.

Cathy Currier, teacher; Amy Cannon, Marshall Bennett, John Moritz, Aliy Maloney, Neil Cullen, Anne Gardner and Noah Dorson, students at Sahuaro High School All were a part of the school's mock trial team which finished first in the region and second in the state in last year's mock trial contest, sponsored by Arizona Law Related Education.

T.U.S.D Student Excellence (1999-2000):

University High School, Sahuaro High School and Cholla High Magnet each had teams place in the statewide mock trial competition. UHS took second place while Cholla placed third and Sahuaro placed sixth. Sixteen teams competed.

The following students received $200 scholarships at the College Night Scholarship drawing held in October:

  • Sahuaro - Amanda Dumsch, Benjamin Crawford

The following were among 10 local high school students who won $1,000 scholarships to learn about heart-disease prevention. They will research and put into place a teaching project at area schools and hospitals as part of the Foundation for Cardiovascular Health's Youth Scholarship Program:

  • Pueblo - Christina Miranda
  • Santa Rita - Dawn Suarez
  • Sahuaro - Melissa Aquino
  • University - Monica Granados, Chang Liu

The Arizona Daily Star selected Reggie Robertson, a senior at Sahuaro High School, as its 1999 Southern Arizona (Football) Player of the Year and Julie Plotts, a senior at Sahuaro High School, as its 1999 Southern Arizona Girls Volleyball Most Valuable Player. Reggie finished his high school career with 7,106 passing yards and 77 touchdowns placing second and third, respectively, in the state's record books. Julie helped lead her team to a 27-5 record and the school's ninth consecutive region title.
