What did you do after leaving BHS?
I played 8th grade and JV football at Baker. In 1959 my stepfather was transferred to Germany where I attended both Hanau Junior High and Frankfurt American High School. I played football at Frankfurt and graduated in 1962. I returned to the US during the summer of 1962 and attended Georgia Tech on an academic scholarsip and was a walk-on for the Tech Freshman football team. I only practiced for a week when I saw the handwriting on the wall and quit. Realizing that I did not want to be an Aerospace Engineer, I left Tech and completed my fresman year at the University of South Carolina. Upon my step-dad's return to the States I transferred to Jacksonville State University and and received my BA and a U.S Army commission in January 1967. I was commissioned into the Field Artillery and after having served tours in Korea, Holland, Vietnam, Germany(3), and the Pentagon, I retired with the rank of full colonel in 1993. After a year of helping my wife recover from breast cancer surgery, I returned to graduate school and received my masters degree in education with a specialty in History. I subsequently taught eleven years in the Alabama public school system in Jacksonville and Cullman, Alabama. I also coached the boys soccer team and won the 2002 5A Boys State Championship. I retired again and my wife and I built a house and settled down in the old Fort McClellan in Anniston. I have been teaching History part-time in a private school in Anniston for the last four years and coaching the girls soccer team. My hobbies are collecting antiques, reading, photography and golf, and of course, spoiling my granddaughters.
